SLostNail,

you are losing it with your gross lack of technical know how.

There are already electric buses operating somewhere in Europe.

I realize any technical discussion wood be all Greek to you but the difficulty with ALL electric vehicles is the recharging when the battery goes flat.

No doubt you will quickly fire back and say that Greenies recharge their electric cars overnite with their solar panels.

Wallowing in Greenie ignorance is briefly amusing but one soon grows tired of it.

In case you hadn't kept up with current events Tesla already has a major recharging network across the USA and many other countries such as china and parts of Europe. Of course aussies being "early adopters of technology" are dragging their feet as usual Cheesy LOL

Also the Tindo bus service in SA has been charging off renewable energy for years Wink

SirLostN,

dream on. Try recharging a Tesla at Alice Springs with solar panels - leave a week free to do it.

The absurdity is that coal power is used to recharge most electric cars.

Imagine the thrill of a flat battery in the Blue Mountains or somewhere remote. U can't just call the NRMA for a jump start.

Like I said dream on.

What happened in SA when they had the blackout ?

SA is TOTALLY dependent on the link to Victorian coal power stations. so U R talking thru your hat but then Greenies...

The Nikola One, which is designed for long-haul good transport across a large landmass, will, according to its creators, be able to travel between 800 and 1,200 miles on a single tank of fuel, while delivering over 1,000 horsepower and 2,000 foot-pounds of torque.

If these claims are true, it will provide nearly double the power of the current generation of diesel-powered semis/articulated lorries.

Is Elon Musk serious about the Tesla Lorry? It runs on a fully electric drivetrain powered by high-density lithium batteries, which are charged on the go by a hydrogen fuel cell...........

The funny part about it is that for all of your negative opinions about it people are still buying their EV's Wink As for coal fired power only 20% of the grid is powered by coal these days. Get with the program will you.

................Toyota's Project Portal truck, which uses an electric motor that puts out over 670 horsepower and 1,325 pound-feet of torque, doesn't need a transmission with a bunch of ratios. In fact, it has just one – its fixed ratio of 15.5:1 allows it to pull up to 80,000 pounds at American highway speeds. And, as the video up above demonstrates, Project Portal is (relatively) quick from a dead stop, out drag racing a conventional diesel-powered truck with a similar 35,000-pound load...........

The Tesla has a range of 480km off one charge which is more than adequate to ferry one to work and back all week , as solar batteries decrease in price the uptake of electric cars will boom as much as house hold solar power is now , and it's boom boom booming rtards and nothing will stop its progress   Smiley

No doubt juliar needs to travel 481km so Tesla should stop its production line and close its factory  now Cheesy LOL

This is an international focus. The 2015 IRENA Technology Brief indicated renewable energy could provide an average of 44% of global energy by 2030. While the IEA projections were lower at 30%, they reached 48% by 2050.

That seems far short of a current 80%. Perhaps you were quoting nameplate capacity, rather than despatchable power.

The gross technical ignorance of the Greenie types is well known and expected. That is why nobody believes anything they come out with.

It takes about 7 Tesla lithium batteries just waiting to catch fire on the wall of your house to recharge a Tesla car overnite.

Getting a flat battery in an electric car is a major disaster in a remote area. It is the fear that every electric car driver always lives with.

The battery in a Tesla car is quite large and takes hours to recharge with a mains charger.

You can't just call the NRMA and get a jump start. A very expensive tow to somewhere that has mains power is required after waiting hours for someone to show up.

The battery capacity is always the major drawback in any electric vehicle particularly in trucks. And then the recharge time is the other drawback.

On the TV is a show of outback truckers hauling 50 tonne loads and more for 1000's of kms thru Australia's outback. Even a Greenie might realize an electric truck would be useless for this sort of work. But then the Greenie would probably say all it needs is some solar panels on the roof!!!

Hydrogen is a far more practical source of power as it can be quickly refueled just like LPG. Producing the hydrogen requires a bit more research. Hydrogen is a non-polluting renewable resource. Hydrogen can be produced by electrolysis.

Both electric and hydrogen need infrastructure of course.

The life of a battery in an electric car is a matter of major concern as it is very expensive to replace. The moral is NEVER EVER buy a second hand electric car!!!!

An electric car is too expensive but would be OK for travelling to and from work with a recharge overnite but long distance trips to nowheresville are strictly out!!!!

The other drawback with electric cars is the filthy dirty poisonous radio active manufacturing process to produce the batteries and the magnets in the electric motors.

All this dreadful technical stuff will be all Greek to the armchair arm waving Greenie types scouring the Greenie web sites.

Lostnail just won't give up. Typical armchair arm waving Greenie type.

There are numerous things that go wrong with electric cars as they have highly complex electronics which do go wrong.

But the chance of getting a flat battery in an electric car is guaranteed at some time - all it takes is not watching the battery reserve. And because of the hours off the road while recharging there is the temptation to push your luck.

The chances of a mechanical breakdown in a well maintained petrol car is rather remote unless it is knocked around.

Hydrogen is the fuel of the future as it is quick refueling and totally clean exhaust.

There is one academic thought with hydrogen as the exhaust is water vapor it will create effectively clouds of water vapor in the sky which will inhibit heat transfer.

Why because you still have to take it up the arse at the fool bowser ??

When are we going to see hydrogen fool bowsers ?? Always available in 20 years time Cheesy LOL

And BTW Nikola has nothing to do with Tesla. It is a different company trying to compete with Tesla.

What can go wrong with an EV ?? One electric motor !! One motor controller and that's your lot Cheesy LOL

Did they tell you about massive expensive carbon fiber hydrogen tank under enormous pressure ?? A ticking time bomb that terrorists would have a field day with Sad

Tesla EV won't allow you to drain the battery below a certain point and it will direct you to the nearest charging station using its GPS. Only a moron like yourself couldn't follow the directions and allow the battery to discharge to those levels.

SLostNail,

I think you might find there are 4 electric motors U NO 1 for each wheel as there are actually 4 wheels.

The permanent problem for electrics is the range and the long time to recharge.

Hydrogen has it all over batteries as the network is just like the existing LPG and refueling is quick and easy.

Pulling into a servo to recharge your Tesla means a half day wait while the hydrogen car just pulls in and leaves in 10 minutes or so.

The electronic complexity of the electric Tesla is a fertile field for complex very expensive problems and a service would be a nitemare with all that complex electronics to go wrong.

A well maintained reasonable new petrol or diesel car will just go on and on trouble free unless it is abused.

With electric Tesla there is the ever present fear of a flat battery despite all the beeps and GPS guidance to the nearest recharge 100kms away.

Imagine the cost of a 100km tow - $1000.00!!!

Hydrogen is all the go and networks are already being built. You can actually run a petrol car on hydrogen gas. Needs special oil tho like LPG.

Tesla hasn't released details of its charging so don't draw conclusions. One thing is for sure trucks are not driven 24 hours a day so there is plenty of time for a charge or top-up. This fact seems to allude you.

Also all modern fossil fool cars have complex electronics for the engine management etc. This fact also seems to allude you.

And this hydrogen rubbish was supposed to be here 20 years ago and today it is still 20 years off into the future Cheesy LOL

Only someone who was brain damaged would ignore the warning light for a charge. Note that you haven't said anything about the warning light when you run low on petrol.

SLostNail,

As an armchair arm waving Greenie you get a tick for persistence (stubborness) but not for your missing technical knowhow which is simply being copied off Greenie Propaganda Web Sites.

But like all Greenie types you will just go on and on till the cows come home and still say nothing.  Reminds one of Bull Shorten.

In the mean time in between time diesel will continue to power the BIG TRUCKS hauling 50tonne loads across Australia.

In case you were unaware LNG is widely used for public transport buses. LNG is a gas (methane) in case you did not know.

You need to deal with realities. There is only a finite amount of fossil fool on the planet and sooner or later it is going to run out not to mention irreversibly damage the environment so cut with the greenie propaganda nonsense. It is you who thinks the current status quo can keep going on indefinitely. Like Abort and his 400 years of coal Cheesy LOL

Tesla are smart people. They employ some of the smartest people around. Do you honestly think they have not thought through the energy supply chain and logistics for this ?

Contrary to your predecessor longprong58 who has been proven wrong on every count, Tesla has sort all of this out for cars so they have obviously got a plan for trucks Wink No doubt one of the incentives is to make the energy a lot cheaper than filling up two large tanks with Diesel or hydrogen. People who own these new trucks will work around the new paradigm and adjust their business model accordingly in exchange for saving bucket loads on their energy and service requirements Wink

Lee disgraces itself again. Not all the energy in petrol is converted into kinetic energy by car engines. In fact it is less than 20% conversion if all driving conditions are averaged in.

Whereas the conversion efficiency from a battery is in the order of 90% in tems of energy output as a percentage of energy input by charging.

and the total well to wheels efficiency of petroleum is woeful once you extract it from crude oil  from the ground, refine it and transport it across the world using polluting diesel ships and trucks etc etc It's terribly inefficient whereas the sun shines in everyone's backyard and transferring electrical energy across wires is infinitely more efficient than transporting fossil fools in trucks !!

Refueling is the only thing that matters when it comes to long distance truck haulage as is the case here.

Refuel in minutes at stations regularly located though out the country of refuel in hours.

You'd know all about fisting.

People and businesses want to pay as little as possible for energy so renewable energy is the answer. Seeing that no driver drives a truck for 24 hours a day there is perfect opportunity to recharge it during its off road time. How do you think the Tindo electric bus service work in Adelaide ??

Exchange batteries are probably the way to go for electric vehicles, probably quicker that filling a 300 litre fuel tank.

I am in favour of electric vehicles and I am sure the technology will keep improving.

But I have no illusions of them being cheaper that petrol or diesel vehicles.
The government will tax the road you drive on if they cant tax the fuel, they will tax the tyres, whatever it takes they will milk you.

You are utterly clueless aren't you?

How much do you thinks it costs to have a truck barely halfway through its journey stood down in the middle of bumfkk nowhere while getting 'cheap energy'?

The buses leave the depot and return to the depot the same day, long haul trucking does not work like that you fkking dolt.

The battery switch-and-go concept never took off. It's not an issue of charging up fast because you can always top up at home when you are a sleep so that you always have plenty of range for the next day. Range anxiety is no longer an issue with cars like the Tesla Wink

I'm not responsible for the figures. You can do the math and tell us how many powerwalls a truck would need and the weight. And of course most trucks use diesel. Wink

How do you think the Tindo electric bus service work in Adelaide ??

http://reneweconomy.com.au/adelaide-creates-worlds-first-solar-powered-public-tr...

Long Haul trucking is what Jevons Paradox is all about: wasting the worlds precious resources on a JIT culture that simply spells greed!

Jevons Paradox makes the rich richer but it's actually just stealing: thus war results!

1. Night shift step into trucks when day shift finishes.
2. Trucks need to be moved at night, they get pre loaded, shunted etc.
3. Do you have any concept of just how many trucks run around the country??
4. Its hard enough finding someplace to pull up and sleep, let alone one with an extension lead facility.

The thread title reminded me of this:

The Tesla Forum of WA proudly presents the 2017 Tesla Expo, an exhibition of the work of Nikola Tesla, one of the most prolific inventors and scientists in history.

Yeah great. Sure beats my usual 20 minute refuel, 1200-1500 litres diesel.. I burn a litre every 2.2km and 2500km a week. Do the math.
