What do you think this means, Lees?

Quote:
latitudinal temperature variability over our study area is not significant

"In geography, latitude is a geographic coordinate that specifies the north–south position of a point on the Earth's surface. Latitude is an angle (defined below) which ranges from 0° at the Equator to 90° (North or South) at the poles. "

Source: wiki

So there is not much variation in temperature N-S in that location. So that the temperatures are relatively uniform in the studied area.

So if you looked at the map the temperature trends are -

0.35º +/-0.46ºC/decade
0.56º +/-0.43ºC/decade
1.01º +/-1.42ºC/decade

So the uncertainty is wider than the reported temperatures, except for one.

I thought the  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes was a clue as to how I meant that.

Now about the question I asked?

So there isn’t much temperature variation between the islands.

How does that indicate no temperature increase?

I guess that is too hard for Lees to answer.

The islands are getting warmer and moss is growing faster. That is not hard to grasp, dunno why it needed two pages.

Nope. I have been out.  I didn't know I was supposed to answer according to your timeline. Wink

Where did I say there was no temperature increase?

The only one to show a temperature increase above the noise has been essentially flat since about 1955.

The_Barnacle wrote on May 20th, 2017 at 10:52am:
Scientists studying moss in an area spanning 640 kilometres have found a sharp increase in growth over the past 50 years, said the report in the journal Current Biology.

“Temperature increases over roughly the past half century on the Antarctic Peninsula have had a dramatic effect on moss banks growing in the region,” said co-author Matt Amesbury, of the University of Exeter.

“If this continues, and with increasing amounts of ice-free land from continued glacier retreat, the Antarctic Peninsula will be a much greener place in the future.”

Five moss cores — or column-like samples drilled from the Earth — showed evidence of what scientists called “changepoints,” or points in time after which biological activity clearly increased.

Areas sampled included three Antarctic islands — Elephant Island, Ardley Island, and Green Island — where the deepest and oldest moss banks grow, said the report.

“This gives us a much clearer idea of the scale over which these changes are occurring,” said Amesbury.

“Previously, we had only identified such a response in a single location at the far south of the Antarctic Peninsula, but now we know that moss banks are responding to recent climate change across the whole of the Peninsula.”

Just thought I would bring this back to the front.
