The greening of Antartica
May 20th, 2017 at 10:52am

...

Scientists studying moss in an area spanning 640 kilometres have found a sharp increase in growth over the past 50 years, said the report in the journal Current Biology.

“Temperature increases over roughly the past half century on the Antarctic Peninsula have had a dramatic effect on moss banks growing in the region,” said co-author Matt Amesbury, of the University of Exeter.

“If this continues, and with increasing amounts of ice-free land from continued glacier retreat, the Antarctic Peninsula will be a much greener place in the future.”

Five moss cores — or column-like samples drilled from the Earth — showed evidence of what scientists called “changepoints,” or points in time after which biological activity clearly increased.

Areas sampled included three Antarctic islands — Elephant Island, Ardley Island, and Green Island — where the deepest and oldest moss banks grow, said the report.

“This gives us a much clearer idea of the scale over which these changes are occurring,” said Amesbury.

“Previously, we had only identified such a response in a single location at the far south of the Antarctic Peninsula, but now we know that moss banks are responding to recent climate change across the whole of the Peninsula.”

Yep. Too funny. Three islands outside the Antarctic Circle have mosses growing.

In the Northern Hemisphere mosses grow on the North side of the trees, that is towards the cold. Here they grow because it is nice and toasty?

Yeah, would expect more moss to be growing as Antarctica warms.

In the NHemisphere moss grows on the moist side of trees, the side away from the sun.

Also trees only grow in much warmer environments than Antactica. lee has got it hopelessly wrong again.

lee's ridiculous post just confirms to me that he is a troll.

Yup, a troll who tries to cover up facts, including:

Quote:
sharp increase in growth over the past 50 years

Those past 50 years were a period where the sun has been relatively quiet.

Yes. Now why do they grow in full(?) sun North of the Antarctic Circle. ie Not Antarctica?

Did you understand the bit about the islands being outside the Antarctic Circle? Wink

“Full sun?” Who was the troll saying the sun hardly hit the polar seas?

From the paper -

" Mass accumulation (r2 = 0.82, p = 0.013) and growth rates (r2 = 0.75, p = 0.026) are significantly positively related to latitude, but since latitudinal temperature variability over our study area is not significant (Figure 1; [23, 24])"

"We found significant changes in all proxies (carbon isotope discrimination, microbial productivity, moss bank vertical growth, and mass accumulation) and at all sites, reflecting increased biological activity across the length of the AP over the past ca. 50 years (Figures 2 and 3). The precise timing of these shifts varied, but the prevalent pattern of change indicates a widespread biological response to increasing temperature. "

So there is very little in the way of temperature increase, but it is the temperature increase that done it. R-i-i-g-h-t.

...

Just love those temperature trends.

Try again. The Islands are not polar. The same as Southern Greenland. Wink

So we have an article about the Antarctic peninsula showing how much is warming and lee makes a pretty pathetic attempt to obfuscate by turning it into a discussion about trees in the northern hemisphere.

You are fraud lee

Nope. Not turning into a discussion on trees. Just trying to get you to use logic.

I should have known it would be a fail. Wink

What do you think this means, Lees?

Jeez. Are you that stupid. Nothing between polar and tropical? Sounds like the gap between your ears.

Edit: But yes they are sub-Antarctic. Wink
