The very word 'politics' assumes the practitioners employ every degree of falsehood and deceit to achieve their purposes.

The bombing of Pearl Harbour is a classic case in point where the US president and Britain's Churchill conspired to let the bombing happen so that it would bring the Americans into the war.

I guess Roosevelt and Churchill, being consummate and experienced politicians, knew well that truth was to be a respected 'enemy' against the greater good of a 'noble lie'. It's capacity and inclination to out the liar at its best opportunity was, no doubt, well understood by these true statesmen.

... errrr, yes.

Roosevelt presided over an America that was dead-set against an overseas military commitment to fighting Hitler while Hitler posed no military threat to the US.

'Pearl Harbour' was just the catalyst needed to rouse the indignation of the American public to the degree that it then demanded retribution against the Japs and its allies.
