New Stereo
Apr 16th, 2017 at 1:36am

Bought a new stereo today.
My old Yamaha died Sad

Was researching a Denon DM40DAB.

Bought a Sony Shake -X1D
Took me a bit of fine tuning to get it sounding nice.  I am fussy.
It's pretty ok though.
The graphic equaliser enables fine tuning to suit the room and my hearing.

Much more 'flexible' than the denon

I am a bit lost.
Is this just speakers, how do they work?
What do you plug into them?

That's it Sprint. It seems people either love or hate them. I wondered if anyone on here had any experience with them.

Thanks Ayn...

Don’t know where you’re located but if you’re in Australia think carefully about Denon. An excellent brand BUT here in Oz they’ve changed importing agents frequently, each new one refusing to service or provide parts for models imported by the previous distributor.

Nearly all high-fi snobs (I’m one of them) hate everything Bose produces.
However, if what you expect from music is just something you can sing along with or listen to in the background while whipping up a Pav or whatever they can be just what you need.
Be careful though not to buy one of their models where the satellite speakers are supposed to be mounted high up on the wall (out of site?) with the bass speaker ( you can’t call them woofers, they don’t go low enough) hidden under your sofa. You could be in for a nasty suprise with instruments being poured down from above your head totally disconected from the bass going phoomph, phoomph, phoomph from underneath your couch. Some people find that’s OK, to me it’s just crazy.
The other Bose model to stay well away from is the small single speaker radio/CD player at the bottom of their range. Audio snob or not I suggest most people are going to hate these gutless little things.
Another thing to remember. Don’t buy anything off the web sound unheard. If you want to know what your hard earned is being spent on find a respected audio dealer and ask for a demonstration. Don’t however waste their time after they’ve demonstrated gear and then expect them to provide after sales service for stuff you’ve purchased off the web. Most dealers will tell you to go jump.

You haven’t told us though what you expect from a system. Do you want background music and radio/cd etc or do you expect to get something that goes loud enough for dancing at your next party?Do you need Bluetooth connectivity with your mobile? How big is the room you’ll be using this in? It’s almost impossible for anyone to make an informed recommendation without that minimum of information.
Hope that isn’t all too complicated.

Thank you Ayn. I am by no means a hi-fi snob. all I want is a quality sound system that plays digital radio and cd's (mostly classical).
Dancing at Chez Felon these days is more minuet than hip-hop so that's not a factor.
I appreciate your suggestions and will keep them in mind as I search...

Well then, can we look forward to you posting a few of your favourites on the music thread? At times I feel like I'm from another planet when I post anything classical.

If you tell me which state of Oz you’re in I may be able to recommend a specific dealer. The ones you want to avoid are the kind who look down their noses if you want to spend anything less than a fortune.

Where did you learn to dance the minuet? Hope you’re not as stitched up as this lot.

Are you a hi-fi snob? You dissed my Thiels  Shocked

Read my post again. I didn’t know which model you had. My comments were about a pair of Thiels I owned.  I pointed out I was never sure if the peculiar bass response was due to my room or the speakers. I also remarked they were the first speakers I’d owned that got three dimensional depth and space right - or words to that effect.
And yes, I’m a snob in the sense I’ve spent many decades searching for the ability to reproduce music realistically in my various residences. I’m at the stage where I no longer have that nagging feeling when I listen to music of ‘It could be better’. I become a snob if listening to gear prevents me feeling the heart and soul of the music.
There’s another debate in there but I’m past getting into arguments about all this.
