AUSTRALIA has appealed to China to urgently intervene amid a threat of regional hostilities as North Korea warns the world its missile program had taken it a step closer to hitting the United States mainland with a nuclear warhead.

Speaking at a security conference in Canberra, Defence Minister Marise Payne led international condemnation of North Korea which has quickened its nuclear missile testing program as it claimed to be on “the brink of war” with the US and its Western allies, presumably including Australia.

Senator Payne said Australia’s economic security relied on a secure and stable Indo-Pacific region and that was currently under threat by North Korea’s “provocative” actions.

“Our stability is threatened by North Korea’s continuing reckless and destabilising behaviour,” Senator Payne said, echoing a sentiment by ally US President Donald Trump earlier in the day.

“The ongoing pursuit of its nuclear and ballistic missile programs is a clear breach of UN Security Council resolutions and further threatens regional peace and stability. We have consistently called upon North Korea to cease its provocative behaviour, to abandon its nuclear and missile programs and to engage constructively with the international community.”

But she said Australia’s appeals could not be made alone and China needed to now use its regional muscle to bring North Korea into line.
