St. Petersburg metro explosion: At least 10 dead in Russia blast

By Tim Lister, Emma Burrows and Angela Dewan, CNN

Updated 1933 GMT (0333 HKT) April 3, 2017

Moscow (CNN)At least 10 people were killed in a blast on the St. Petersburg metro Monday, three state-run Russian news agencies said. Authorities say the explosion is a terrorist attack.
An explosion tore through a train as it was traveling between two stations in Russia's second-biggest city, injuring dozens more.
A second device was found and defused at another station, Russia's Anti-Terrorism Committee said. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, which led to the shutdown of the city's metro system.

President Vladimir Putin, who had been in St. Petersburg earlier in the day, said all causes were being investigated, including terrorism. Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev described the explosion as a "terrorist act."

My thoughts are also with the innocent victims.

I hope that the perpetrators are brought to justice.

St Petersburg metro explosion:
Russian authorities hunt two suspects

Bomb blast on metro train killed 11 people and wounded dozens more on Monday afternoon, officials say.

Russian authorities are hunting for two people suspected of organising and carrying out a bomb blast on a St Petersburg metro train, which killed 11 people and wounded dozens more, and leaving a second explosive device at a metro station.

The explosion occurred at around 2.30pm local time on Monday, after the train had left Sennaya Ploshchad station in the centre of St Petersburg. The driver made the decision to continue to the next station, Tekhnologicheskii Institut, in order to make evacuation easier.

The explosive device had been left inside the carriage, according to law enforcement sources. Those on the train spoke of a blast that was mainly felt in the carriage where it occurred, three from the front of the train.

“I don’t think it was that loud, but then I was wearing headphones,” said Andrei Shurshev, who was in the next carriage along. He told the Russian news site Meduza that after the blast there were some sparks and dust in his carriage, and a smell of smoke.

“We went to the end of the carriage and got out at the station. In the next carriage there were no lights, and a lot of smoke. People were smashing the windows to get out. I saw a metro employee pulling out an injured person.”

Some analysts believe that while Russia's activity in Syria has successfully killed many potential terrorists, it may also have motivated many others to strike back at Russia.
Indeed, ISIS claimed in 2015 that this was the motivation for the planting a bomb on a Russian passenger jet in October 2015, killing 224 people.
The Syrian connection isn't Russia's only terror concern.
A long-simmering, separatist and Islamist insurgency in the northern Caucasus region has repeatedly proved capable of staging large, devastating operations.

My niece was on that train-line only two years ago, and then she was in Germany last year.

Nowhere is safe any more.
