Equal Rights for Palestinians
APARTHEID AND OCCUPATION

More than 5 million Palestinians are denied equal rights by the state of Israel under a system of apartheid, a deliberate policy of racial or ethnic segregation.

Under Israeli military occupation, millions of Palestinians live in conditions which closely resemble the apartheid system that existed in South Africa:

No right of free speech, assembly or movement
Arrest and imprisonment without charge or trial
    Torture
    House searches without warrant
    Assassination, extra-judicial murder
No right to vote for the Israeli government (even though it controls their lives)

Israel controls all Palestinian borders, all imports and exports, and all movement between towns and cities.
THE GAZA STRIP, still surrounded, besieged and controlled by Israel, has been sealed off and effectively turned into the world’s largest open-air prison.

WHAT IS ISRAELI APARTHEID?

Former U.S. president Jimmy Carter was the first prominent figure in this country to apply the term apartheid to Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian territories—East Jerusalem, Gaza, and the West Bank. Israel’s apartheid system, however, also affects Palestinian Arabs who make up 20 percent of the population within Israel itself. Apartheid is a central feature of the Zionist state that proclaims it is exclusively for Jews.

The word “apartheid” originated to describe the rigid system of legal segregation imposed by the white supremacist South African government against people of color in that country from 1948 to 1990. The word itself is from the Afrikaner language and means “separateness” or “apart.” Afrikaners were Dutch settlers who denied basic democratic and human rights to that nation’s black majority and other people of color. In 1948 they formalized racial segregation by making it the law of the land, a policy they called apartheid.

Israeli apartheid is both like and unlike the system of segregation that existed in South Africa. It is also similar and dissimilar to the system of legal segregation that existed in the American South for many decades. The word apartheid could easily be used to describe the system of legal segregation that existed in nine U.S. Southern states from the end of the Reconstruction Period to the mid-1960s when the civil rights movement achieved some of its greatest victories. It could also describe the de facto segregation that existed outside the U.S. South and resulted in the creation of black ghettoes in nearly all U.S. cities.

Three key features characterize Israeli apartheid:

Four million Palestinians in the Occupied Territories lack the right to vote for the government that controls their lives through a military occupation. In addition to controlling the borders, air space, water, tax revenues, and other vital matters pertaining to the Occupied Territories, Israel alone issues the identity cards that determine the ability of Palestinians to work and their freedom of movement.

About 1.2 million Palestinian Israelis, who make up 20 percent, or one-fifth, of Israel’s population, have second-class citizenship within Israel, which defines itself as a Jewish state rather than a state for all its citizens. More than 20 provisions of Israel’s principal laws discriminate, either directly or indirectly, against non-Jews, according to Adalah: The Legal Center for Minority Rights in Israel.

Millions of Palestinians remain refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and elsewhere, unable to return to their former homes and land in present-day Israel, even though the right of return for refugees is enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

In 2008, the South African government commissioned a study by leading legal scholars and human rights experts to determine if Israel was practicing apartheid in the Occupied Palestinian Territories according to the parameters of international law. After a 15-month investigation, the study concluded that “Israel, since 1967, is the belligerent Occupying Power in occupied Palestinian territory, and that its occupation of these territories has become a colonial enterprise which implements a system of apartheid.”

Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who received a Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to end apartheid in South Africa, said of Israeli government policies, “I've been very deeply distressed in my visit to the Holy Land; it reminded me so much of what happened to us black people in South Africa. I have seen the humiliation of the Palestinians at checkpoints and roadblocks, suffering like us when young white police officers prevented us from moving about.”

Does this mean you oppose the two state solution because it is essentially an apartheid regime?

Israel\'s industrial zones polluting Palestinian territories

Jerusalem - Sona al-Deak

The settlements\' chemical factories poison Palestinian lands with toxic Toxic inhalation, waste and pollutants emitted from Israeli industrial factories on settlements in the West Bank, has been causing concern amongst  Palestinians, due to the serious harm to the environment and for people\'s health. Five Israeli industrial zones are built on Palestinian territories in the governorate of Silfit, containing 160 factories, which produce aluminum, leather, batteries, plastics, cement, food cans, fibre glass, chemical cleansers, Insecticides, marble, military equipment and other materials not suitable for populated areas.
\"The residues from these factories are causing harm  to health in addition to the environment and natural resources, especially drinking water and  cultivated lands,\" Jamil al-Motawer, deputy director of the Palestinian Environment Administration, told Arabstoday.
He added: \"The industrial drainage of these factories has reached  Palestinian cultivated lands and the water wells from which the sheep and cows drink. This drainage is also leaking into the groundwater resources, Needless to say,  these industrial zones prevent any chance for normal expansion of  Palestinian villages and towns.\"
The Palestinian governorate of Silfit, which includes 23 Israeli settlements, in which there are five industrial zones --  the most harmful being located in the settlement of Burkan. This zone contains factories producing some of the most harmful industrial residue for health and the environment. .
The director of the Palestinian Water Institution, Saleh al-Rabi, told Arabstoday that the industrial zone of Burkan produces more than 800,000 m3 of harmful industrial drainage,  which all finds its way to  Palestinian land and water resources.
\"The most affected villages of this drainage are Kafr el-Deak and Deir al-Ballout, \" Rabi said.
Air pollution is another main threat  which is emitting from Israeli factories, especially the plastics factories, which leaves solid chemical residues that are burnt and dissolved in the air, as well as the leather tanning factories, which leach heavy pollutants into the water.

Wastewater Disposal

Large amounts of raw wastewater are disposed of by the 306,000 Jewish settlers in the West Bank and Arab East Jerusalem, threatening to pollute the West Bank Aquifer. While accurate information about wastewater generated in the settlements is difficult to obtain, it is estimated that 80 percent of domestic water ends up as wastewater. This means that approximately 4.3 million cubic meters of wastewater are generated per year from Jewish settlements in the West Bank. A large amount is dumped, untreated, on Palestinian land, creating a health hazard for many communities.

Domestic Solid Waste

According to a study conducted by the Environment Office of the Israeli Civil Administration in the West Bank, it is estimated that the daily amount of domestic waste generated per Jewish settler is 1.3 kg. Thus, the total quantity of solid waste generated by settlers is about 145,000 tons of domestic waste. Again, Palestinians have no access to information about the disposal of solid waste generated by settlers. Evidence shows that much of the waste is being disposed of on Palestinian land and dumping sites. The solid waste generated in West Jerusalem, for example, is transferred to the Abu Dis dumping site. Table 1 shows the Jewish settlements and military bases that dump their waste on Palestinian lands.

Industrial Waste

There are at least seven Israeli industrial zones in the West Bank. These occupy a total area of approximately 302 hectares, located mainly on hilltops, which often results in the flow of industrial wastewater into adjacent Palestinian lands. In addition, the Israeli authorities have moved many of the polluting industries from various places in Israel to areas near the Green Line or inside the settlements. For example, a pesticide factory in Kfar Saba which produces dangerous pollutants has been moved to an area near Tulkarem. The wastewater from this factory has damaged the citrus trees and polluted the soil in the area, and poses a serious hazard to the groundwater.3 The Dixon Gas industrial factory, which was located in Netanya, inside Israel, has also been moved to the Tulkarem area. The solid waste generated by the factory is burned in open air.
Israeli industrial factories also exist in Jewish settlements in the West Bank. It is estimated that at least 200 such factories are located there. Some of the products are identifiable, but detailed information on quantities produced, labor, and waste generated is not available. Aluminum, leather-¬tanning, textile-dyeing, batteries, fiberglass, plastics and other chemicals are among the major industries within these Jewish settlements. The waste generated by them contains toxic elements, such as aluminum, chromium, lead, zinc and nickel. For example, the aluminum industry which is found in many Israeli settlements produces aluminum and acidic waste. Electroplating produces nickel, chrome and acidic waste. The battery industry produces lead in its wastewater. All of these inorganic substances are considered hazardous to health if accumulated in the human body.

Palestinian lands located at the foothills of industrial zones are particularly vulnerable to the flow of industrial waste and evidence shows that pollution-prevention measures are not followed inside the Israeli factories. Also, the generated industrial solid waste is often collected and dumped in areas near Palestinian villages. An example is the Barkan industrial zone located in the Nablus district over a 150-dunum area. It includes approximately 80 factories of various industries, such as aluminum, fiberglass, plastic, electroplating and military: these produce an estimated 810,000 cubic meters of industrial wastewater annually. The waste was previously collected in three storage tanks, but due to design failure, these tanks are overloaded with mud and not operational. Therefore, the industrial wastewater flows untreated to the nearby wadi, damaging agricultural land which belongs to three Palestinian villages - Sarta, Kufr A-Deek and Burqin in the Nablus district - and polluting the groundwater with heavy metals.

Israeli Quarries

Quarrying impacts negatively on the landscape and the environment. It causes serious changes to the topographic structure of the land and pollutes the air with huge amounts of dust in the working area. Dust affects the respiratory system of people living within close proximity of quarries and damages crops.

Israel constantly uses the West Bank quarry stones to meet its building needs. The Israelis have confiscated an area of at least 18,700 dunums in the West Bank to construct seven quarries, in various locations. The largest is the Wadi Al-Teen quarry in the Tulkarem district, on an area of 9,685 dunums. In the Ramallah district, an Israeli quarry is located near Kufr Malik village, on a 2,523-dunum area. Israel plans to construct another quarry in the Ramallah district on land belonging to the villages of Rantis and Shuqba. In the Hebron district the following areas have been confiscated for quarries: 1,744 dunums between Dura and Al-Thahiriya; approximately 2,677 dunums from Tarqumiya, Dura and Khirbet Jamroura villages; and 2,077 dunums of land belonging to the village of Surif. Lastly, a quarry is located on land which belongs to Majdal Bani Fadel village in the Nablus district.4

Conclusion

Clearly, Jewish settlements are a cause of destruction of Palestinian land and a source of pollution of the Palestinian environment. In addition to creating a major political dilemma for the Palestinian Authority, due to their illegal presence and continued expansion, making impossible Palestinian geo¬graphic contiguity, settlements also adversely affect both the environment and the quality of life today, and for generations to come.

From the Opening Post

Israel's UN envoy Danny Danon issued a statement condemning the report late on Wednesday.

"The attempt to smear and falsely label the only true democracy in the Middle East by creating a false analogy is despicable and constitutes a blatant lie," he said.

UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric, when asked about the report, said it was published without any prior consultations with the UN Secretariat and its views do not reflect those of the secretary-general.

Borderline Views: Ensuring religious freedom in Israel

It is high time the government also made it clear that those people who desecrate Muslim and Christian sites in Israel are the full equivalent of anti-Semitic hooligans, terrorists.

A Friday morning tour of the Mount Zion area, just outside the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem, organized by the impressive government- funded ICORE research project on Study of Conversion and Inter-Religious Encounters. We are introduced to the multiple complexities of this tiny piece of territory, encompassing within it the Dormition Church, the reputed Tomb of King David and place of the Last Supper, the Franciscan monastery and the separate Armenian, Greek, Protestant and other cemeteries, bordering on each other in a complex mosaic.

Unlike most areas of religious tension and conflict in Israel, there is no significant Muslim presence here at the moment, although it is clear from their architecture that many of the buildings, especially the King David site, date back to Muslim periods – many hundreds of years after the death of King David or the events of the Last Supper. The small Muslim Dajani-Daoud cemetery is fenced in tightly and is no longer in use, while the neighboring buildings, which used to belong to the Dajani family, are now occupied by the Holocaust Cellar Museum and the Diaspora Yeshiva.

The conflicts and tensions among the various Christian denominations and the active renewal of the Jewish presence, most notably through the takeover in recent years of David’s Tomb, are clear for all to see. The room of the Last Supper is now off limits to Christian prayer because of the Jewish argument that such prayer is idolatrous and full of impurity, and that this impurity should not be allowed to descend downward into David’s Tomb. This bizarre argument has been upheld by the courts and enforced by the police.

The accounts of Jewish youth accosting priests on the street and spitting at them, of graffiti on the walls of monasteries and churches and the desecration of gravestones in the local cemeteries are hard to accept, but there are too many such documented accounts for it to be pushed aside as the work of a few deviant youth. The establishment of a new police station in the very heart of Mount Zion and the installation of CTV cameras at almost every corner and passageway are disturbing evidence of the renewed religio-political tensions. Strict rules have been introduced restricting prayer services and other religious practices and such events are limited to a few holy days in the year. Religious and sectarian tensions have developed in recent years as a new, young, radical group of extremist right-wing elements have sought to take control and bring about a “Judaization” of the mountain.

All this takes place against the backdrop of the desecration of the Tabta Church overlooking the Sea of Galilee last week, also by groups of Jewish youth acting in the name of religion. Can there be a greater desecration of God’s name in the Holy Land than Jews doing to other religions what was done to their fathers and ancestors by other governments and religions throughout centuries of exile? They may wear the kippot, tzitzit, etc., but the last thing that they, or their teachers (who call themselves rabbis) can be labeled is “religious.” It is the ultimate “chilul hashem” (desecration of God’s name) which they have performed and it is high time that we, and our government, stopped pretending that this is just a small group of deviant youth which doesn’t reflect the wider sub-strata of society within which they are growing up and being educated.

We should have been proud of the fact that the president and prime minister condemned the action, that Knesset speaker Yuli Edelstein convened a group of rabbis and religious leaders to set up a fund to help repair the damage to the church. But we didn’t hear any major statements of denunciation from the Chief Rabbinate, the official state religious authority.

Most of the right-wing government ministers have remained silent, where they would have been the first to shout out loud were it a Jewish cemetery or synagogue under attack elsewhere in the world (in Europe or North America), demanding that the respective governments and police forces immediately take action to arrest the culprits, to make good the damage and to put in place security measures aimed at ensuring that such activities are not repeated in the future.

Instead, we have heard one of the country’s most extreme right-wing rabbis, Dov Lior, formerly of Kiryat Arba and recently relocated to Jerusalem, questioning the idea that Jews should donate money toward the restoration of the church, arguing instead that the same money should be used for restoring the desecrated graves on the Mount of Olives which have been damaged by loathsome people acting in the name of Palestinian nationalism and Islam.

As though there is some symmetry in acts of desecration. If they can do it to us, then we have the right to do it to them. Reducing this bitter and endless conflict to tit for tat child’s game – what you can do I can do better.

As though there is some symmetry in acts of desecration. If they can do it to us, then we have the right to do it to them. Reducing this bitter and endless conflict to tit for tat child’s game – what you can do I can do better.

Lior conveniently ignores one of the most important tenets of his own religious Zionist ideology – namely, that the Jewish people are sovereign in their own land after 2,000 years of exile and, as such, are ultimately responsible for the safety and freedom of everyone living under their control. Sovereignty comes with obligations, not just rights. Given the history of the Jewish people in exile, there can be no greater obligation than showing to the world that Jewish sovereignty really does honor and protect the rights of religious minorities and freedom of religious practice, in a way that was not always accorded to the Jews throughout the long history of persecution and oppression.

Lior and like-minded rabbis also forget to acknowledge the fact that the religion in whose name they speak has very clear teachings concerning the rights of the “ger,” the stranger in our midst. If we are unable to live up to these standards, then we have failed to honor the independence and sovereignty for which we have fought so hard, and which still stands in the balance as our enemies (and we have plenty of these) would like nothing better than for the State of Israel to disappear back into the sea of the Diaspora.

They would like nothing better than to show that the Jewish state has no more regard for holy Muslim and Christian sites than that displayed, for centuries past, for Jewish institutions and places of worship throughout the world.

While Edelstein and prominent religious leaders such as former government minister Rabbi Michael Melchior, should be commended for the action that they have taken to partially reimburse the church for the damage, it should not have had to come to this.

The government should have immediately, within hours of the church desecration occurring, offered to pay the full cost of restoration. They should not have had to rely on private contributions to make good the damage and, for that matter, for only a small part of the actual cost.

It is high time the government also made it clear that those people who desecrate Muslim and Christian sites in Israel are the full equivalent of anti-Semitic hooligans, terrorists, not misguided youths, who should be arrested, charged and imprisoned for lengthy periods of time. The disgrace that they bring to Israel and the Jewish people is immeasurable and only helps to turn the few friends we still have in the world against us.

This not turning the other cheek. Israel should be proud that it is expected to behave according to different, higher, principles. Just as we do not want to be judged by the standards of the barbaric behavior and terrorism of some of the neighboring regimes, so too we do not want to be judged in comparison with the anti-Jewish behavior of groups around the world. If that opens us to greater criticism when we fail to behave according to these principles, then that should be seen as a badge of merit, not as a weakness.

Failing to do so means that we have betrayed the most important principle of being a sovereign nation in our own land, the responsibility of caring for all those who are subject to our control. Those who would spit on priests in the Old City of Jerusalem, write anti-Christian graffiti on the wall of a monastery or damage a church in the Galilee are directly responsible for weakening Israel’s own sovereignty and its justification for Jewish rule in the Land of Israel.

No I do not oppose the two state solution but the BIG question is HOW could this be achieved?

We have allowed Israel to do as it pleases for far too long.

Could Israel be forced to go back to the 1967 border allowing any Jews that wanted to stay in the occupied land if they so wished and given Palestinian citizenship and Palestinian in Israel’s territory given full Israeli rights and citizenship if they wish to stay there.  Would Palestinians and Jews accept that?  Could a buffer zone controlled by a peace keeping force be formed between the two?  Will the Palestinians who were forced out of Palestine be allowed to return to their land?

I really don’t know what can be done but sure know that something must be done as the Palestinians have been suffering for 70 years under the apartheid Israel rule.  Jews and Arabs used to live peacefully in Palestine before the Zionists took over.

The Palestinians rule themselves. It is not Israel's fault they dedicate all their spare efforts to throwing rocks at Israeli tanks. It does not take an international agreement for Palestine to become it's own state. They merely need to do it themselves. After all, that is exactly how Israel was formed.

Nearly 400 Israeli settlers storm Aqsa Mosque again

Nearly 400 Israeli settlers, guarded by regime forces, have once again stormed the al-Aqsa Mosque compound in the Israeli-occupied Old City of East Jerusalem al-Quds.

Firas al-Dibs, spokesperson of the Islamic Waqf, which manages the compound’s affairs, told the Palestinian Ma’an news agency that large groups of Israeli settlers, approximately 385 in total, “raided the mosque” on Thursday.

The official also told Turkey’s Anadolu news agency that the intruding settlers tried to perform rituals and attempted to attack the mosque guards, while Israeli forces made two arrests in the mosque’s courtyard.

The al-Aqsa Mosque compound is a flashpoint Islamic site, which is also holy to the Jews.

Under a 1967 deal between Israel and Jordan, the compound’s custodian, non-Muslim worship is prohibited at the site.

In defiance of the agreement, the regime in Tel Aviv regularly allows Israeli settlers and extremists to enter the site and carry out religious rituals -- often under armed guard.

Thursday marked the third day of the Jewish holiday of Passover.

In a similar move on Wednesday, nearly 300 settlers and extremists entered the compound by force, performing acts deemed provocative by Palestinians.

In the lead-up to Passover, Israeli forces had detained at least 30 Palestinians during raids in occupied East Jerusalem al-Quds.

Muslim bodies in Jerusalem al-Quds condemned the incursions, saying they are meant to change al-Aqsa’s historical character.

“We cannot accept such arbitrary, barbaric … measures under the pretext of Jewish holidays,” the Department of Islamic Waqf and Islamic Higher Council, as well as Dar Al-Ifta and the Supreme Islamic Council, said in a joint statement.

Last week, the Palestinian Prisoners’ Society (PPS) criticized the Israeli regime for stepping up its crackdown on Palestinians every year during Passover.

“For (Palestinian) Jerusalemites, the Jewish holiday season means an escalation in arbitrary detentions, house raids, and searches -- measures that terrify families. The installation of additional security checkpoints, particularly at the al-Aqsa Mosque (compound)’s gates and in the Old City, only increase tensions in Jerusalem,” the PPS  head in Jerusalem Nadi Qaws told Ma’an last week.

In a war in 1967, Israel captured the West Bank and East Jerusalem al-Quds, where the Aqsa Mossque compound is located. Since then, Tel Aviv has continued to expand its illegal settlements there.

Israel orders demolition of Palestinian mosque in al-Quds

Apr 14, 2017

Israel has issued an order to demolish a mosque in the occupied East Jerusalem al-Quds claiming that the building has not obtained construction permit.

The order for demolition of Abdullah l-Sanawi Mosque in Silwan neighborhood was issued on Thursday.

According to Fakhri Abu Diab, a member of the Committee for the Defense of Silwan, the mosque was built several years ago on Waqf land using donations from the people to serve 4,000 residents of the area.

Abdullah Al-Sanawi Mosque is among six Palestinian mosques threatened with demolition in the area, he added.

In late December, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) announced that Israel’s demolition campaign against Palestinian homes and structures across the West Bank and East Jerusalem al-Quds had reached the most unprecedented level in the past seven years.

Israeli demolitions of Palestinian homes and structures have raised alarm among diplomats and human rights groups over what they regard as the Tel Aviv regime’s continued violation of international law.

On April 5, the Israeli parliament, known as the Knesset, approved a controversial law targeting what are said to be illegal constructions amid criticisms that the legislation will disproportionately affect Palestinians and Arab communities.

The legislation increases the maximum imprisonment for those convicted of building without permits to three years from the current two-year term.

The legislation, which further hikes fines and reduces the powers of courts to postpone the date of demolition orders, will also target 300,000 Palestinians living in the occupied East Jerusalem al-Quds.

Tel Aviv has accelerated its land grab and settlement construction activities in the occupied Palestinian lands after pro-Israel US President Donald Trump took office earlier this year. Human rights groups say Israel’s sustained demolitions of Palestinian homes are aimed at uprooting Palestinians from their native territories and expropriating more land for the expansion of settlements.

Israeli forces have demolished over 48,000 Palestinian homes and buildings since the 1967 occupation of the Palestinian lands, according to the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions.
