I got stuck behind some idiot truckies protesting on the freeway this morning. They got on the freeway just before a major bottleneck in the traffic flow at 6:30 am. The traffic was already backed up. Three large trucks and a ute all tried to merge at the same time so they could stick together, nearly causing an accident as people tried to get out of their way. They drove at about 5km/h. By the time they exited the freeway, people were driving on the grass on the side of the freeway to get around them. They had huge banners hanging off the back of the truck. One of them came loose just as they were exiting and blew back on to the freeway. So cars that were now accelerating up to full speed had to slam on the brakes and swerve to get out of the way.
It turns out they were protesting their wives leaving them and not letting them see their kids. Richard Head, president of the organising committee for the protest, called in to a local radio station shortly after to try to counter some of the criticisms people were making.
"Honestly, you lot sound just like my ex, having a go at me for inconveniencing you. It reminds of her last birthday before we got divorced. I brought home 34 whiting which I had grand plans to fry up for a special dinner for her. When I got home she came out of the house in a fancy dress, God knows where she got that from, and had a go at me. She wouldn't even clean the fish, and I ate them myself cause she was out to dinner with some friends, which she forgot to remind me about."
"And you go on about safety just like her to. Is it my fault if you drive through the dust on the side of the road just because you are late for work and collide with the car in front of you? And if a large piece of plastic blows onto the freeway in front of you causing havoc, it probably means you were driving too fast. Look at how slowly our drivers went during the protest. That was supposed to make things safer. You should follow their example. It reminds me of the time my wife blamed me for the kids getting injured. I told those kids what would happen if they weren't careful. Now my wife thinks it was my fault just because I was the one who happened to be home at the time."
He was interrupted by the host suggesting that instead of dreaming up ways to waste everyone's time and make them angry just to get a point across, he should try to be nice to his wife and help her out, and maybe it was not appropriate for him to be looking after their children without another competent adult present. Mr Head insisted he had done the right thing:
"You say I should help out, well look at what we achieved this morning. We moved heaven and earth to raise awareness of our plight, and now you are calling us selfish. Mate, you are the one who is selfish."
