THOUSANDS of unionists are expected to bring parts of Brisbane and the Gold Coast to a standstill on Thursday as they launch a anti-WorkChoices-style campaign against the Federal Government’s industrial relations agenda.Although individual unions will be responsible for directing any stopwork actions on the day, organisers are expecting thousands to join the rallies, which will include a march through Brisbane’s CBD from Roma St to Waterfront Place.
The mass rallies, which are part of a national campaign, were unanimously endorsed last week by the Queensland Council of Unions executive and its 28 affiliate members in a meeting that also discussed strategy and tactics for a prolonged fight against what they called the Turnbull Government’s “radical” industrial relations agenda.
QCU general secretary Ros McLennan said the unions were “circling the wagons” in response to widespread member anger over a recent Fair Work Commission decision to reduce some Sunday penalty rates, the reintroduction of the Australian Building and Construction Commission, increasing wage inequality and the erosion of working conditions and safety.“Australian workers saw this pattern under John Howard in 2007 and they’re seeing it again now under the Turnbull Government,” she said.
“They will stand up and fight back when their wages and conditions are under attack.”

Thursday’s action will affect Brisbane and the Gold Coast.
State Opposition spokesman for employment and industrial relations Jarrod Bleijie said the unions were the Labor Party’s “puppet masters” and accused them of “deliberate political sabotage”.
“The cost to businesses particularly in the construction industry with the involvement of the CFMEU and ETU is millions of dollars every day when they have these political strikes,” he said.
“That’s all they are and for no other purpose than political disruption.”
A spokesman for the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland said the deliberate decision to rally on a weekday would cause severe disruption to commerce and hurt small businesses.
“CCIQ would implore unions and others involved to consider the impacts that a large-scale protest will have on the sales and profitability of businesses in the city,” he said.
Construction unions such as the Construction Forestry Mining and Engineering Union and Electrical Trades Union have heavily promoted the rally on their websites.
The CFMEU declined to comment about whether their members would stop work on Thursday.
The SDA, which is Australia’s largest union and covers retail and hospitality workers directly affected by the decrease in Sunday penalty rates, also did not respond.
Plumbers Union Queensland state secretary Gary O’Halloran said individual members would be advised that a rally was on but would need to take the day off to attend.
The Federal Government did not respond to our requests for comment.
