FBI refused WH request on Trump-Russia stories 03:51
Washington (CNN)The FBI rejected a recent White House request to publicly knock down media reports about communications between Donald Trump's associates and Russians known to US intelligence during the 2016 presidential campaign, multiple US officials briefed on the matter tell CNN.
But a White House official said late Thursday that the request was only made after the FBI indicated to the White House it did not believe the reporting to be accurate.
White House officials had sought the help of the bureau and other agencies investigating the Russia matter to say that the reports were wrong and that there had been no contacts, the officials said. The reports of the contacts were first published by The New York Times and CNN on February 14.
The direct communications between the White House and the FBI were unusual because of decade-old restrictions on such contacts. Such a request from the White House is a violation of procedures that limit communications with the FBI on pending investigations.
Late Thursday night, White House press secretary Sean Spicer objected to CNN's characterization of the White House request to the FBI.
"We didn't try to knock the story down. We asked them to tell the truth," Spicer said. The FBI declined to comment for this story.
This is an enormous story as it is the WH trying to get the FBI to LIE about the russia story. This is making watergate look like playtime. This administration is going to be destroyed by it. Trump will be impeached and half his senior staff going to jail.
Imagine, in Watergate, Nixon's staff was found guilty of the botched bugging of a small Democratic campaign office.
In Trump's case, his staff have been found to be consorting with a rival foreign power, who hacked the entire Democratic campaign's communications and leaked them to the world in order to win Trump the election.
It's chalk and cheese. Watergate was bungled. No foreign power was involved. In Trump's case, we have evidence, not only Russia meddling in and influencing a US election, but of Trump's staff discussing its plans for office with Russian officials, attempting to cover this up, and now, attempting to influence the work of the FBI tasked with investigating it.
We also have credible FBI suspicions that Trump has been blackmailed, and two of Trump's high-ranking cabinet members' close ties with Russian business interests, including Trump's Secretary of State. One Trump cabinet pick has stood down because of his Russian ties, another has been sacked by Trump for lying about his communication and close relationship with the Russian government - a federal crime.
But the most clear evidence of all is Trump's own defence of Putin, his remarks that alledge the US plays just as dirty as Putin (by a sitting US president), and statement after statement of pro-Putin rhetoric - rhetoric that supports and justifies an expansionist foreign power curently engaging in human rights violations and war crimes on two fronts: Syria and the Ukraine.
It's unprecedented, it's in our faces, and there's much more to come. Trump's alleged collusion with Russia to influence a US election makes Watergate look like amateur-hour, which of course it was. And Watergate led to the first ever US presidential resignation in history.
It's hard to imagine Trump getting away with this one, but so far, with his party firmly in power, that's looking like the most likely scenario.
But at least the sh1t's finally hit the fan. At least we know.
You might want to excuse it, but no one can deny that any of this is happening.
