in regards to dealing with the left, anything does go. however, when dealing with politics proper, you need to address the needs and concerns of the majority. this is what trump did and what the left failed to do. the left will continue to fade as long as it remains fixed to fringe issues that either have nothing to do with the middle working classes or are detrimental to them.

The only real surprise is that he can still muster 40%. My guess is if that he is still in office by end of year, it will be 20% or below.

And, Trump's inauguration had the lowest turnout ever.
