A trade show is where my 9mm Taurus came from. Decent price, too.

Trade shows can be a bit of a tricky problem, as they can provide a way for people who wouldn't be able to easily acquire a weapon, to do so.
"Known as the "gun show loophole," most states do not require background checks for firearms purchased at gun shows from private individuals -- federal law only requires licensed dealers to conduct checks.

Under the Gun Control Act of 1968, federal law clearly defined private sellers as anyone who sold no more than four firearms per year. But the 1986 Firearm Owners Protection Act lifted that restriction and loosely defined private sellers as people who do not rely on gun sales as the principal way of obtaining their livelihood.

Some states have opted to go further than federal law by requiring background checks at gun shows for any gun transaction, federal license or not. The majority of these such states require background checks at the point of transfer for all firearms. Alternatively, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nebraska, New Jersey and North Carolina regulate purchases by prohibiting private dealers from selling to individuals who do not have licenses/permits, which they obtain following background checks. Some states' requirements are limited only to handgun purchases.

Even in states that do not require background checks of private vendors, the venue hosting the event may require it as a matter of policy. In other cases, private vendors may opt to have a third-party licensed dealer run a background check even though it may not be required by law."

http://www.governing.com/gov-data/safety-justice/gun-show-firearms-bankground-checks-state-laws-map.html

Most Americans don't own guns. I think the image of every household polishing their rifle with a gleam in their eye, is highly inaccurate. However, many of us who choose not to own one, would resist any efforts to do away with the right to bear arms.

"Different national polls tend to show slightly different rates of gun ownership. The latest household gun ownership rate in the General Social Survey, in 2014, was 32 percent. The October 2015 Gallup survey showed a higher rate of 43 percent, including guns kept on property outside the home."

There's nothing wrong with turf wars where they reduce each others numbers with a little gun play. Some would say they are performing a useful public service.

I would not have hesitated to use it had he come in through my door..he knew it was just me there, he was watching for quite a while..
even though you will charged with murder in such circumstances.. you cannot hurt or kill an intruder on your property..the US has it right in that regard..

What an awful experience for you. If you had no 'priors', my betting would be that you wouldn't have been given 'jail-time' - especially as you had a baby and a toddler there and were otherwise alone. No judge would have ripped you away from your children for shooting the bastard stone cold dead.

Over and again we have cases of wives who have killed abusive husbands getting released from jail on appeal.

I'm in the market for a crossbow as a substitute for a gun. I've fired a bolt from a genuine Middle Ages crossbow and so I know how lethal they are.

Women should be allowed to carry pepper-spray or mace in their handbags. Jill Meagher might still be alive after her fatal encounter with Adrian Bayley.

True.

In this semi-rural area most homes have guns. Consequently home invasions, robberies are almost non existent. The local sheriff encourages the purchase of guns - says it makes his job easier. Of course you need a permit and its desirable to attend a course in how to handle firearms safely.

Gun owners are probably more likely to hurt themselves or someone else accidentally than defending themselves against a criminal. But its their choice to own a gun. You cannot legislate against stupidity - only minimize the risks. But not being able to defend yourself or your family from an attacker or intruder in any way you choose as in Australia is wrong.

What country would try to invade America militarily with its 300 million guns? On the other hand Australia with its fabulous wealth, vast underpopulated area and resources may someday wish that they were more like America.

It's a shame Virginia Morse didn't have a gun handy, but then she wouldn't have suspected these two had bad intentions and were capable of doing what they did.

It was a clear case for the Death Penalty, but since the laws had long since been feminised and Christianised no such action was taken.

Precisely.

Your statement presupposes that you & I, as human beings, have an inalienable right to self-defense.

This right is not a right that needs to be granted by any government or person, this right is a Natural Right....a Right bestowed upon all mankind by the Creator....Nature's God....a Superior Being, long before the institution of any government......long before the idea of government even became an idea.

Protecting ones life & property is simply a Natural Right that can not be transferred, relinquished, or abolished simply....simply because it wasn't a Right granted by Man, & therefore Man has no jurisdiction over the Right itself.....only the outcome of the exercising of that Natural Right.

The Department of Justice figures show blacks have a 6 times higher homicide rate in the USA compared to whitefellas- page 11
www.bjs.gov/content/pub/pdf/htus8008.pdf

In Chicago where they have strict gun laws black lives don't matter when blacks are shooting blacks- heyjackass.com

In Bristol Rhode Island they allow people to have scary black semi auto rifles and concealed carry with pistols, no murders for over 16 years with a murder rate of 0.0 per 100K which makes it safer than any city in Australia,Bristol is white middle class USA
city-data.com/crime/crime-Bristol-Rhode-Island.html

We are not allowed to have weapons for self defence in Australia, our politicians want criminals to have a safe working environment

Marla,

Do you have/require a concealed carry permit where you are ?    [Colorado, right ?]

Why do you require a 9mm Taurus ?

Lol, that myth again, you yanks sure like to cr@p on. Simply because you rely so much on  your guns is what would make you bigger victims. Fighting a war is a lot more than simply having a gun handy, the average american could not under any circumstances be considered as part of a "well regulated militia".

Herb, don't go cutting people off in traffic or giving the finger if you are the one cut off. Asserting yourself with rude behavior may not end well. Ask yourself if you would want your children or grandchildren to see you do that.

Road rage that escalates is relatively rare where I live, every reported incident is paraded endlessly on TV until the talking heads find another attention grabber. After all, the News broadcasts are really there to keep you in front of your TVs during the commercials, not inform you about anything.

Hopefully during this Legislative session National Reciprocity will pass. If you are within the laws of your state about concealed carry then you are legal in all States. If there is no restriction in your state about concealed carry than some proof of residency will be all you need. Imagine if your marriage was not valid outside your own State.... Hum, some might feel we are going in the wrong direction.

Yes me too.. and hopefully a lot easier to get than another rifle.. just  love the idea of a cross bow for target practice, something so appealing about them, but awful for  hunting, so much room for error and I believe them to be a rather cruel way to hunt..
