You don't catch a train to sit and chat to the train driver or the other passengers.  Ditto when you catch a bus.  You just want to get from A to B with a minimum of fuss.

Cabbies in Sydney sit and talk in foreign tongues into their ear pieces the whole time and have God awful music playing on their radios.  I consider that to be inconsiderate and rude.

When I catch a cab the last thing I want to do is chat to the driver, it's not a social exercise, I just want to sit and think my own thoughts whilst not having to concentrate on driving myself.  It's not rude.  It's normal.

You would think that was obvious, but to some it seems inconceivable. Aussie would be an atrocious taxi driver.

When he pulls over to post drivel to ozpol, do you reckon he stops the meter or makes the customer pay?

That is a huge stretch from train driver to cabbie. I think you just wanted to denigrate Aussie. In other words, your post was simple abuse.

Well since a typical tax drive cheats at every opportunity, I will go for the latter.

He called a passenger rude for talking on the phone. I think that's why he's getting denigrated.

it certainly was a bit of a stretch for a taxi driver to complain about that. But it is aussie... so it is not surprising.

The point you seem to miss, and clearly do not understand, is that people do not PAY for transportation (bus, train, cab) because they want a social experience.  They usually just want transportation from A to B.

Now if a cabbie considers it rude that a passenger does not want to talk to him you have to consider that it is equally, or moreso, as rude to assume that when he is being paid to take someone from A to B that the passenger should feel obligated to carry on conversations they clearly do not wish to have.

Just because a person is recognised through the media by said cab driver I would say it was undeniably rude to expect said passenger to carry on a conversation just because the cabbie knew who he was.   Hird clearly had no clue who the cabbie was and wouldn't even want to.  Shouldn't he be allowed adequate privacy when PAYING for a service?  Shouldn't he be allowed to talk on his mobile without being judged?

can you not ask the driver to turn off the music??.

and or even ." you are not in the mood to chat"...

we dont sit with the train or bus driver BO.. a car is a little different I think..and its usually one on one..

give the guys a fair go they work round the clock..in all weathers...I am sure aussie is a good taxi driver..or he would lose his licence...

from what I see everyone that owns a smartphone is on it 24/7 they make me sick to be honest...[not the people the phones]

James Hird would not be alone...and aussie shouldnt judge him by the fact he was on it in his cab... he didnt get in the cab for a chat..

Exactly. When I catch a cab I am hiring a service. I do not want to indulge in senseless conversation. It is rude to assume otherwise.
If I want to throw a peanut to a cabbie I will instigate the conversation, otherwise he should shut up and do what he is being  paid for.
