"Fake News" was itself, "fake news". It was created by corporate media -- aware of their dwindling credibility and relevance -- to artificially create a barrier to competition from independent sources.
Five global corporations control 90-95% of US media. That's incredibly useful, not only for marketing their products, but for pushing the agendas that their owners want Americans to accept.
The problem of the Internet, is it makes it harder to do that. CNN is terrified of going quietly into irrelevance the way they saw small independent media do, as they started their rise.
