Bill Gates likens Trump to JFK

After talking with the President-elect, Bill Gates said he expects him to carry the US through new stages of innovation just like Kennedy did with the space program in the 1960s.
He said he believes the new administration will bring new ideas in areas like education, science & energy through greatly reduced regulation.

JFK gave some great speeches but did little else during his short presidency. The moon landing came years after Kennedy's assassination.

True...

But it was Kennedy's legacy defined by Kennedy in his inaugural speech ("All this will not be finished in the first 100 days. Nor will it be finished in the first 1,000 days, nor in the life of this Administration, nor even perhaps in our lifetime on this planet. But let us begin.") that prompted Johnson (who actually despised the Kennedys) to take on Kennedy's program defined by his address to the nation ("Today in this moment of new resolve, I would say to all my fellow Americans, let us continue."

There's no doubt that the US "chose to go to the moon in this decade" to honour the legacy of Kennedy.

He was, by that, a great leader, who could still inspire and lead his nation from beyond the grave.

It would be a gross generalisation to say it, but Americans are called to action only when they have been inspired by great ideals or statement of resolve that are put to them simply ...

Like "We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard" - the line that put Americans on the moon

Or

"There is nothing to fear but fear itself" - the line that inspired beaten-down Americans to stand and confront the Great Depression

Or

"Free at last, free at last, thank god almighty we are free at last" - the line that rededicated Americans (and two Presidents) to the cause of civil rights...

Well constructed rhetorical speeches may be, in themselves, flawless... But if they don't contain a sound 'one-liner' of clear morality or resolve (put to them preferably not using French/Latin/Greek derived words), then the effect on the American ear is at best tepid... Americans are anti-intellectual in this sense.

It was Khrushchev's aggressive brinkmanship that stationed nuclear missiles in Cuba - 100 miles from the US mainland.
Totally unacceptable to the US.

Kennedy was a very fine president - maybe the best in more recent times.
