Sadly, the internet doesnt have to make us dumb but thats what happening for a lot of people. Imagine having access to the greatest repository and source of knowledge in the history of mankind, in fact almost the sum total of human knowledge at your fingertips. I think Aqua is right, we are evolving into 2 different species, fat Steve and smart Steve. Smart Steve is getting smarter by using this tool to evolve and fat Steve is getting fatter, lazier and dumber. If you dont believe this look at some of the debates on this and other forums every day, the simplest scientific concepts are not known or understood by allegedly university educated people but rather than obtain the information which is at their fingertips thereby making them more knowledgable they will argue, connive and use any other means to dispute the simplest of facts. These people are indeed getting dumber and lazier.

Good points. it is very saddening that the major traffic on the net is porn. shows that people are just going back to animal desires.

What i have observed about people is this.

At some point , you have to make the conscious decision to go up or you WILL go down.

I'm not even saying that going down is bad.
maybe watching tv, getting fat and durping around is the way to spend your time.

But no one is standing still.

The default, i believe , is that each year , without taking action, you go down.  The people i work with are just a bit more beaten down, a few more crows feet, their dreams are just lost.

This happens to a lot of successful people too.
They pull a heavy weight up a long hill and they just get to the point where they are done. they stop caring. they drink. they stop innovating and growing and they go down.

Its biological i think. We are designed to always be trying to conserve time and energy.
so if you can get a hit of pleasure by getting a like on facebook or eating a slice of pizza, you will do that instead of doing something "higher" because instant gratification is addictive, laziness is addictive, lower conscious states are addictive, being sorry for yourself is addictive.

I fully get why people feel sorry for themselves and play the victim.
My problem with it  is that i aint doing it.
I have goals i want to reach and i just dont have time for it. I think people who think they can feel sorry for themselves, who think they can live in lower consciousness are very optomistic.
I know i would never reach my goals if i thought like that.

I dont see social media as a communications revolution, I view it as a product of mass consumption cleverly marketed by multi nationals at the young much like cigarettes were and now becoming inter generationally accepted and utilised for political and other advertising purposes.

OK... But how does that not make it  a communications revolution?

wheres the revolution? People have been talking to each other for hundreds of thousands of years. Its all hype aimed at hooking the kids on "the new way".

Have people been talking to each other from either ends of the world, instantaneously for hundreds of thousands of years?

The characterisation of a (cultural/social or communications) revolution is an action / technological change / philosophical change that so alters the way we perceive / interact with each other and the world that life before that time is deemed history and not reconstructable... Like abandoning electricity, cars, telephones and airline travel in favour of candles, horses, pigeons and ships.

Can you honestly imagine social media can now be abandoned... What is it that the world could return to in its place?

for a relatively short time I experimented with social media, mainly because i was a member of a club which used facebook as the main means of communication.  I was asked why I didnt respond to posts or messages as if it was mandatory in some way, I got "friend" requests from people I had never met or barely knew. someone saw fit to post porn on my timeline, appararently the "default" is to give access to everyone in the world. Then the childish bickering, lots of it, worse than 10 Peccas put together. I had at one stage to physically separate 2 people at the club because of a near fist fight  over not accepting a "friend" request. I realised what it does is just feed and accelerates narcissistic behaviour. My experiment lasted a week, while these people spend their time taking selfies I continue with my training as I have done for decades, not against others but against myself, while these Peccas bicker and connive to attempt to portray themselves as better looking, more intelligent etc. and concentrating on the manufactured drama I still spend my time actually learning things, acquiring new knowledge. Social media is all about playing to others, these people dont understand the trap they are making for themselves, they are simple tools of the multi national corporations.

Excellent post.
Steven Covey in his excellent book, "crucial conversations" has a standing rule that all arguments must take place "face to face" and in the same room as the proximity will tend to bring out the best in people and the technology brings out the worst.

i listened to a marketer talk about how people are spending more and more time (wasting it that is) being sucked into clickbait.

if a marketer can get a couple of cents for every page refresh then they will try to get the people in the durr state to 'just keep clicking".

They found that things like "tattoo fails " where someone mispells a tattoo or celebrity wardrobe fails where a celebrity has a bra strap showing...people will keep clicking on pic after pic in a durrrp state , literally wasting hours.

This marketer even said that "just making sh*t up " is the way to make money.
Just make  up a story.
He found "outrage" to be the most addictive emotion for the masses of durpers.
he made up a story about a kid with a disability being kicked out of maccas for scaring other customers and it went viral. over 10million dumbies viewed it and shared it and made him $$$$$.  yep, stay off of the social media , hit the gym and stay away from group think.
i still always buy a carrot when i take the kids shopping and i walk around the mall munching on it (sometimes a cucumber). and the looks you get from fat steve chowing down on some cheese snack BS food.
fat steve looking at me like i have lost my mind.
Use the mediocre failures as the emotional juice to power yourself into an upward spiral.  Wink Wink Wink.
It is so easy to just stunt on people nowdays because most of them have zero direction. There has never been a time when those with some focus can absolutley crush it in life. its a gift . Wink Wink

Thats what you interpret me as. But Im sure the Rhinos of the 18th century werent getting smarter while those who embraced the industrial revolution were getting dumber.  I harness the technology discriminately and use it as a tool. This information technology revolution is completely different, for one thing it is evolving at a much more rapid rate than the industrial revolution did, children who have grown up with this technology have different brains to their parents. We now have huge multi national corporations totally engrossed in making profit and nothing else, mass advertising of propoganda and subtle subconscious marketing. We have a whole generation of completely brainwashed kids who cant afford to buy a home because their priority is on portable technology enabling them to post selfies any second of the day. Look around you, communication skills are being lost by this generation. Go to a restaurant and witness the tables full of people all looking at their phones. Social anxiety and depression are increasing amongst young people at a phenomenal rate.

agreed. And never been a better set of tools available to use, but the analogy i would draw is to a chainsaw. Point it in the wrong direction and your life is stuffed. Just like the internet.

Im building a fence out the back in between posting here, my sister in law visited and was amazed at my building skills. I said its all there if you want to research it and put it into practise. I spent a bit of time of farms when i was young, you learn independence. My son can build a house from the ground up, self taught. Hold his own with any electrical engineer, again self taught. With the right direction from the old man of course.

more good points.

when i say "dont draw state off of your environment" i think NoN misunderstood.
what i am saying is that you have to draw happiness from within.
For a man particularly, you have to have a purpose and not just seek to "feel pleasure" or "get validation".
Its a feminine frame to seek happiness from the environment. Its why girls have pictures of dolphins and unicorns. they draw happiness from their surrounds. they dress up and seek validation by getting "likes" on pictures. anytime you are approval seeking, wanting others to validate you, you are in groupthink and you are in lower consciousness.

a man should be process oriented and on his purpose.
if your purpose is to put up a fence, then you enjoy the process (the journey). you have a feeling when you have finished it of a guy who has "earnt it". now you can kick back and have a beer and you have that smile of a guy who deserves it. the rich guy who pays someone to build his fence doesnt get to have that.
its why the journey must be embraced and not the results. the result is "what you become"...a competant man, not what you get  ' a fence".

i took my 2 daughters surfing and their friends spent 2 hours on the beach trying to get the perfect picture(of themselves posing)  on a rock with a wave breaking, to post as a selfie (to get validation).
Surfing is process orientation and a flow state.
You can enjoy the activity for the activity itself. the selfie is lower consciousness trying to draw happiness off of others reaction.

reaction seeking or validation seeking... lower consciousness. we have some reaction seekers here at ozpol. They should build a fence or go surfing perhaps  Wink

Sorry to be the one to tell you but Edward Bernays (Sigmund Freud's nephew) is to blame with his 'propaganda' or (as it was renamed after the Nazis arrogated the term) 'public relations'...

His ideas have been fueling advertising for over 100 years... So, nothing new in the zoo.

and what is advertising ?

advertising is for the lower consciousness "mob".
advertising relies on groupthink.

despite the fact that aquascoots ideas are universally derided , let us examine more closely and see if those deriding them are the "lower consciousness mob, stuck in group think' to which i refer Wink

what does aquascoot say.
"you live in abundance. you should fall to your knees and weep tears of joy for the abundance in which you live"
this is usually followed by several posts of horses defecating. Wink
what does advertising say.
"you live in scarcity, you dont have enough. you must have more. things are scarce. you must want, you must need."

let us look at the next great lie of advertising.

what does aquascoot say.
you will never attain lasting happiness out of getting things. you think you will but you wont. it is about what you "become", not what you "get". stop being a taker, stop being needy. develop a love of the journey.

what does advertising say
you will be happy when you get stuff, when you get that million, that house that car and you will remain unhappy until you do.

and finally ,
what does aquascoot say
There is a right way and an easy way to do things and the easy way is usually wrong.
dont take a pill to drop weight study nutrition
dont drink alcohol to get high, go surfing

what does advertising say
Take the easy route. you dont want to hit the gym, heres some gimmick called the 7 minute abs.
blah, blah, blah.

now go get a couple of carrots and sit in a maccas and eat them
then go into a computer games store and sit on the floor and read steven coveys 7 habits of highly effective people  Wink

Im fairly sure they didnt have electronic media 100 years ago, multi nationals and other vested interests are using this to brainwash and fuel their propoganda campaigns. Did that need to be said?

There are two species - but different to yours.

Species one - 'eyes down' looking at their smartphone 24 hours a day. Major cause of death - killed by car while crossing a road without looking.

Species two - 'eyes up' uses a smartphone but knows how to put it down and see the actual world. Major cause of death - old age.

Appreciate the concept, but put me down for NOT living in a house or any project wired up by a self-taught engineer. Unless you mean 'sparky' and not 'engineer' in which case... the same applies!
