Look they are not stupid.  Yes, there will be some small time minions stay behind to 'fight' for their masters till death.  But the power structure probably had already shifted / mobilized months ago.   There is not going to be mother of all battle, its always going to be one sided when it comes to conversional warfare.  Its what happens after, is the main issue.

The settling of 'scores' is going to be a big factor in how this battle is conducted. How ISIS treated women is now about to rebound on them. No mercy.

Hopefully it will be like the 1st Gulf War when the Iraqis left Kuwait -
the Yanks formed a highway of death
& bombed them as they were on the road out.

Eventually they stopped it as was " un-American"
but not before 10's of thousands lay dead.

ISIS are like weeds - you have to pull them out by the roots & destroy them -
not let them come back again.

Did you hear the story from GW1 where 1000s of Iraqi troops were hiding out in trenches so the Americas just got a front end loader and filled it in burying them alive.

Would you drive a front end loader to bury 1000 IS terrorists?

Yes - it's not something I would enjoy but it's a job that has to be done.

Latest on the War:

http://edition.cnn.com/2016/10/16/middleeast/mosul-isis-operation-begins-iraq/in...

(CNN)The offensive to liberate Mosul from ISIS control has begun, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said in a televised statement early Monday.
"Our dearest people in Nineveh province, the victory bell has rung, and the operations to liberate Mosul have begun," he said. "I am announcing today the beginning of these heroic operations to liberate you from the brutality and terrorism of ISIS. God willing, we will meet soon on the ground of Mosul where we will all celebrate the liberation and your freedom."

Only forces with the Iraqi army and National Police will enter the city "and no others," the Prime Minister said.

Burying Saddam's mistakes meant thousands less shooting at the Coalition of the Willing during 'Iraq 2'.

The aftermath of 'Iraq 1' saw a mass-slaughter of Shia by Saddam's Praetorian Guard.

No -

the trouble is that they will never get them all -

although they are surrounding Mosul -

that means that none can get away but
the civilian population will suffer badly in a siege.

ISIL has also been preparing for the operation for the last several weeks. The terrorist group has reportedly used thousands of prisoners to dig a complicated network of tunnels and trenches around the city and filled the wide trench dug around the city with oil to put it on fire as it expects the city to go under siege by Iraq's joint military troops. The terrorist group has opened multiple fronts to confront the government troops.

Meantime, many ISIL top commanders, including Al-Baghdadi himself and his deputies, as well as their family members have left the city for Raqqa, the terrorist cult's second self-proclaimed capital.

Al-Baghdad and his top aides left the city last week, while local sources in Nineveh disclosed on Sunday that the families of the ISIL terrorists that had left Mosul just arrived in the town of Merkedeh in Syria's Hasaka province.

"The ISIL commanders, including al-Baghdadi, are escaping Mosul to Syria," Iraqi Kurdistan Democrat Party's media director Saeed Mamouziti said last week.

He said that al-Baghdadi has also ordered his followers to completely destroy Mosul if they are defeated in the war against Iraq's joint military forces.

Later Mamouziti said that the ISIL militants were fleeing the city since the long-awaited large-scale operation to free Mosul was expected to be launched in the following days.

Meantime, local sources revealed that "ISIL commanders' families, including over 25 foreign families, escorted by military convoys reached the town of Merkedeh" on Sunday.

Earlier on Sunday, local sources in Nineveh province disclosed that the ISIL has brought to a halt all activities of its security offices in the city of Mosul.

"The ISIL has recently issued a circular in Mosul city according to which all its offices will halt operation until further notice," a local source said.

The source noted that the ISIL has already evacuated its security offices in several districts of Mosul in recent days, while many ISIL members seem confused to see the rush in their commanders' actions.

The US has also been pressuring Baghdad to keep the Hasha Al-Shaabi away from the operation, but they are now deployed to the battlefield after Prime Minister al-Abadi, the commander-in-chief of Iraq's armed forces, personally approved their participation in the Mosul operation last week.

The Iraqi media had earlier reported that the Mosul operations would start from several directions, the most important of which are al-Qayyara axis located 60 kilometers to the South of Mosul and Sahl Nineveh some 20 kilometers to the East of the city.

Several Iraqi army units have been stationed in the Northern parts of Mosul over the past two days.

After reports said that the US is hindering Iraq's operations in Mosul to provide the ISIL terrorists with an opportunity to flee to Raqqa, a senior commander of Iraqi popular forces stressed his forces' resolve to block the escape path of ISIL terrorists from Mosul to Syria.

"Our forces will not allow the ISIL militants to flee to Syria and we have gathered precise intelligence about the enemy before starting the Mosul liberation operation," Ahmad al-Assadi, also the spokesman of the popular forces and an Iraqi legislator, said in a statement on Saturday.

He also rejected media reports on the Iraqi army's agreement with the ISIL to leave Mosul, and said, "There is no deal and the ISIL militants in Nineveh will by crushed in the Mosul battle."

The ISIS strategy will ensure that there is little to no conventional warfare involved. There will be human shields and collateral damage every step of the way.

Part of the ISIS ideology is that it literally is the mother of all battles - the final slaughter prophesied in the Koran. Sure, many in the leadership will run and hide, but the more that do, the more they lose control over their propaganda war. A small remnant leadership group with no army and no respect is a genuine victory over ISIS. Islam, particularly in it's more conservative form, is an ideology of superiority.

Also significant here is that it will, for the most part, be fellow Muslims doing the slaughtering. Sure, the west will be pulling all the strings it can and will cop abuse for the next 300 years for doing so, but the west has been doing this ever since it drove the Caliphate out of Spain, and no Muslim group has done more than ISIS to make Muslims thankful for that western interference.

The aftermath will be chaotic and bloody, but there is no way around that, given the hostility to western troupes on the ground. The broader threat posed by ISIS justifies this. They are as close to a literal reincarnation of the third reich or Muhammed's original caliphate as you can get, and there is every indication they would have continued growing into a powerful force without significant foreign intervention.

Liberating Mosul A Walkover,
Not A Great Battle As Hyped

By Stephen Lendman
10-17-16

Controlled by US-supported ISIS since 2014, a hyped Iraqi offensive together with US combat troops began on Monday.

US-installed Iraqi puppet prime minister Haider al-Abadi issued an early morning statement, saying:

“Our dearest people in Nineveh province, the victory bell has rung, and the operations to liberate Mosul have begun.”

“I am announcing today the beginning of these heroic operations to liberate you from the brutality and terrorism of ISIS. God willing, we will meet soon on the ground of Mosul where we will all celebrate the liberation and your freedom.”

According to US Joint Chiefs Chairman General “fighting Joe” Dunford, “operations against Mosul have already started.”

Defense Secretary Ashton Carter declined to explain what’s planned, saying success depends on secrecy - disingenuously hyping what he called a “decisive moment” against the terrorist group America supports.

When Iraqi and US forces enter Mosul, most, perhaps all ISIS fighters will be gone - Washington and Riyadh arranging for their safe passage relocation, a source reported by RT International, saying:

“More than 9,000 Islamic State militants will be redeployed from Mosul to the eastern regions of Syria to carry out a major offensive operation, which involves capturing Deir ez-Zor and Palmyra.”

Pentagon-led “coalition” warplanes only intend bombing vacated buildings, pretending to be combating ISIS. The operation is a great hoax - a walkover, no liberating battle, undertaken to “counter Russia’s achievements in Syria,” aiming “to diminish their importance.”

It’s also to redeploy thousands of ISIS imperial foot soldiers to battle government forces in Syria - supported by Washington and its rogue allies, escalating war on its people and sovereignty while pretending to want peace.

New York Times editors hyped the stage battle two days before initiated, ludicrously calling it a likely “turning point in the American-led fight against the Islamic State.”

The Times and other media scoundrels perpetuate the myth of Washington’s war on terrorism, failing to explain ISIS, al-Nusra and likeminded groups are US-created and deployed imperial foot soldiers - unable to exist without foreign support.

Key is what’s ongoing in Syria, Iraq a sideshow and distraction. Washington heads toward escalating conflict against Assad - virtually certain with Hillary’s likely ascension to power.

Will war on Russia follow by accident or design - the crucial issue above all others deplorable media scoundrels ignore?
