Children were targeted in Munich McDonald’s shooting

WITNESSES are reporting that the gunman who opened fire in a shopping district in Munich targeted children.

The attack began shortly before 4pm Friday (2am AEST) at a McDonald’s restaurant and continued on a nearby street before the gunman moved into the shopping centre, a police spokeswoman said.

At least 10 people — including children — have been confirmed dead according to Munich police spokesman Peter Back.

Inside the McDonald’s eatery, the gunman loaded his weapon in the bathroom before walking out and massacring those inside, it is claimed.

Horrified witnesses watched as the shooter set his sights on the most helpless victims.

“Boom, boom, boom, I heard, and then I saw all the injured,” a witness inside the McDonald’s named Lauretta told CNN.

“I was in the bathroom with my kid, and I only saw him shoot directly into the faces of children,” said Lauretta, who watched the shooter load his weapon. The children were sitting to eat. They can’t run.”

She also said she heard him shout “Alahu Akbar!”

“I know this because I’m Muslim,” she said. “ I hear this and I only cry.”

Contrary to this, local media examined video footage of the attack and reported that the gunman was ranting against foreigners and Turks, suggesting a right-wing attack.



The shooting comes exactly five years after white supremacist mass killer Anders Breivik murdered 77 people in Norway.

Munich police have tweeted that the shooter eventually turned the gun on himself and took his own life. They also now believe he acted alone.

A backpack that appeared similar to the one seen in videos purporting to show the gunman was found near the body. Police are using a robot to check the backpack.
