You miss the point - once there are enough maggots the flies stay away - it is fierce competition for a rotting corpse....

No, I believe you miss the point. What attracts the flies to the corpse is the smell. The flies lay their larvae onto the corpse, which eat away at the dead tissue. Once the corpse comes to a certain stage of decomposition, even the flies have done their job and take off for other areas. There is no point staying around, once their little darlings are chomping into the dead tissue. Maggots are not competing with flies. The flies are trying to use the dead animal as a breeding ground.
