A special gift from the gods on Olympus for their chosen children.
Am enjoying right now a home made apple tart.

I know that the generally accepted way of making an apple pie is to use green apples, but I always use red apples and, to my mind, the result is much better.  You don't need to add any sugar (or for that matter anything, unless you want a hint of some spices) and the flavour is more delicate than when you use green apples.  Royal Gala apples seem to be the best for this purpose although Fuji work well too.

All you need to do is mix up a batch of shortcrust pastry, roll it out, line the pie tin, fill with sliced apples (no need to partially cook them beforehand), put the top on the pie and bake until it's ready.

I love stewed apples [i prefer Granny Smiths].

Almost every day, i will simply have a cooled portion in a desert bowl, sometimes with plain yogurt added, but often just by itself [and sans any pastry].

I must be 'addicted' to stewed apples.      Wink

I always stew up about 3 days/portions worth, keeping the remaining portions in the fridge.

Because i do like stewed apples, i bought one of those Apple Slinky Machine Peeler Corer tools.

And it is wonderful!

If you have to peel and core many apples, that tool does make it so much quicker and easier!

Yadda, I am firmly of the view that stewed apples are one of the greatest aids to good digestive  health & balance.

Somewhere, lurking in some cupboard not visited this many year, is a vintage apple corer bought from a heritage museum many moons ago. It is built to last generations but it really is made for high volume use such as in the kitchen of some old large home peopled with servants.

My grandson loves stewed apples, especially if there are some sultanas mixed in with them.

If more kids were brought up on such old simple home cooking there would be less health problems don't you think. And maybe even less of these behavioural problems.
But one hears of families complaining of being "time poor"

bogarde73,

I hadn't really thought about it, but perhaps it is my love of stewed apples which has some bearing upon me being a well balanced person.           Wink

hehe

cheers.

Exactly so, imo.
Very simple foods, are the most beneficial to our health, imo.

I agree.

I firmly believe that, for the sake of our good health, highly processed foods, should be avoided, as much as possible.

I usually eat very simple foods, and my taste-buds always enjoy, and never complain, about the lovely foods i partake in.

I always enjoy eating, what i eat.

It would work and probably quite nicely too, although it would modify the flavour a bit.  I only ever used sugar and a bit of cinnamon when using green apples but, with red apples, the fruit itself is sweet enough, so you don't really need to add anything unless you have a rather sweet tooth.

I have always avoided anything using beer as I cannot stand it but I watched Fast Ed make his on BH&G on Friday night and my son was drooling at the pies he did with the leftover stew.

When I remember to buy some beer/stout I will try it.
