Voting is NOT compulsory in Australia. No one stands beside you in the polling booth and makes you mark your ballot paper. No one actually forces you to accept a ballot paper when you have your name marked off the electoral roll.

All that you are required to do is just that, have your name marked off the electoral roll and as far as the state is concerned, that confirms you have voted. All votes are secret, if made. I one knows who voted for whom.

Unlike the UK, where your electoral roll number is marked on your ballot paper at the time of issue. All ballot papers are retained for IIRC 10 years and so your vote can be traced and they can identify everybody who voted for a particular candidate. Hardly a "secret ballot" in the UK! Roll Eyes

IF you don't turn up and get your name marked off the COMPULSORY Electoral Rolls, the AEC fines you $20, if you ignore that they will take you to Court .... so it is compulsory to vote. If it wasn't they wouldn't go to so much trouble to MAKE you vote to avoid a FINE and possibly Court. Grin

That's my argument anyhow and I am sticking to it. Grin

It's the one day every four years when we don't live in a democracy.

To their credit, the US and Britain remain staunchly democratic on these issues.

Needless to say it's compulsory in order to force the bogan Labor voters to leave their pubs and clubs and race courses to attend the booths.

As much as you dance around it, Herbie the reality is that voting is NOT compulsory in Australia. No one makes you cast a vote. No one makes you accept a ballot paper. Therefore, voting is not compulsory. Roll Eyes

No one forces you to accept a ballot paper.

No one forces you to mark your ballot paper.

Therefore voting is NOT compulsory. No matter how you argue otherwise, until those two conditions are met, voting is not compulsory. Roll Eyes

Those things that are compulsory concern the mechanics that make our society run smoothly, safely, and for the betterment of all, but the right to vote or not to vote is in an entirely different ball park of consideration, and has never been put to a referendum for voting upon any more than has a whole swathe of other issues that go begging for a vote.
