Severe weather warning for Australia's east coast as monster storm approaches

Gale force winds, monster waves and heavy rain are expected to batter the east coast this weekend with conditions worsening until Sunday.

A low pressure system forming off the south-east Queensland coast tomorrow is predicted to travel slowly southward gaining intensity as it moves across the NSW coastline.

Some of the state's northern areas could be hit with up to 300mm of rain with the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) issuing flood warnings.

BOM forecaster Rebecca Kamitakahara told ninemsn severe weather is expected to bring gale force winds to many coastal regions.

"We are going to see some very big swell and dangerous surf conditions initially in the north and right along the coast until Sunday," she said.

"We are also going to see strong gale force winds developing right along the NSW coast."

"Generally speaking this is going to be a wet weekend across most of eastern NSW."

June 02, 2016: Flash flooding and gale force winds are expected to hit south-east Queensland in the next 48 hours, as a severe weather system moves across the state.

The BOM forecaster said the heavy rainfall was expected to increase by Sunday as the system travelled south.

"We are expecting a low pressure system off the south-east Queensland coast sometime tomorrow that will track slowly," Ms Kamitakahara said.

"We are going to see rainfall increase right across the east tomorrow morning."

Southeast Queensland residents are also in for some wild weather on Saturday, but forecasters say it might not be as bad as initially feared.

A strong upper trough is moving faster than expected, meaning reduced chances of flash flooding.

We're expecting 80+ mm tomorrow and maybe 40 or so Sunday.... about time.... might settle the wood smoke a bit..... in the middle of renovations and got stuff stacked everywhere... be out checking in the morning.  So far no wind or rain, only cloud.

We are supposed to be getting heavy rain for a while tomorrow, seeing that the forecasts are rarely wrong these days. After Monday, we should expect the first real cold of winter. Every year, we get showers at the start of winter, and then the cold air starts chilling our bones for the next month or so.

Explosive cyclogenesis is seen on average just once per year, but these storms cause significant wind and flood damage when they occur

I mentioned it in a general way without knowing his living arrangements, as is my right to have an opinion on such things.

Mr Aussie piped up and took it as a DIRECT insult to his living arrangements, accused me of being a troll from his past and immortalized my comment in his signature.

Had he approached it in a different way I'd have said sorry dude, I'm sure the subject of your particular living arrangements is perfectly lovely, no direct offense intended.

For we who live in Sydney, it's all bullshit of course.

Sydneysiders know from long experience that any storm worth its salt ALWAYS comes as a surprise to everybody - including the boys down at the Met office.

If they tell you a 'big storm' is on its way - then you can be sure it will be a fizzer.

Guaranteed.

That's not a bad app., Redneck - but I have one that's even more accurate than the professional forecasters.

"What is it?" you ask.

Snails.

Snails climbing up the neighbours' wall.  They know DAYS in advance of the multi-million dollar Met Department that a 'Big Wet' is coming - and they tell you how much to expect by how high they position themselves up the wall.

Never fails.

The snails can feel it in their bones.  Cool

Another strange thing Herb is the way crickets suddenly appear after rain. It can be dry for three months then one day of rain and suddenly crickets are chirping in the garden.

Back in the day I'd have been out windsurfing on days like this.

I've been to this spot when waves splashes were making it higher than the cliffs.

See if the winds and swell increase tomorrow.

a bit of a rumble at 4 am this morning

virtually no rain since 9 am

what a fizzer.

Exactly what I told youse all.

Real storms come out of the blue as a complete surprise in Sydney.

Predicted 'storms' almost always wimp-out before they reach Sydney.

It's been pissing down here.

Brisbane radar.
http://www.weatherzone.com.au/radar/qld/brisbane

Grafton radar.
http://www.weatherzone.com.au/radar/nsw/grafton

Our river height. Another day like today and it'll top the levee.

Hah!

On-and-off light rain and light to moderate wind here.

Enough to ruin a weekend outdoors, but nothing to write home about.

A fizzer.

And then there was silence. Not a drop on the tin roof for 15 minutes. I hope it's gone, the radar shows it moving offshore now..

If it had stayed onshore it'd be a whole lot worse. We are drenched, the whole yard and under the house had 6 inches of water. If you look at the river height plotting I posted on the previous page, it will rise for another 12 hours without more rain.  They called it, it was an ocean in the sky spreading downpours over thousands of miles. It could have been as bad as they predicted with different winds.

I wonder how they are going a bit further south. Check the Grafton radar on the previous page. It's still raining here, just not torrential as it has been most of the day.

All we had up here (despite all the doom and gloom) was a downpour over a couple of hours.

Still....I'd rather they alarm me than tell me all is well.

Our levee is 10.2 metres with a 10.1 early overflow to try and direct the water through a less built part of town, through car parks.. I think we're safe though. 7.8 metres is my guess.

Had a fair shower and then rain in Rockhampton. Must have been up to 40mm of rain last night, and it was good to soak the ground a last time before we get that cold, dry weather expected of June and parts of July.

Hope the farmers got a good soaking.

Cool

It's always the ants for me. The start gathering in massive numbers, and they look for a good place to hide. It is usually a couple days in advance of the rain.

That's true. I used to get these tiny little ants trooping into the kitchen and setting up camp around the sink, but I haven't seen them for years now.

The waves pounding against the North Shore beaches?

It's a fizzer here where I live in Bogansville where there's signage warning people not to make eye-contact with the locals if they don't have Private Medical.

A pissy little drizzle -- I've seen worse in public toilets at the urinals.

Cods. Do you believe it? The "whole" world has never been covered by water. Yes the Himalayas were once at the bottom of the ocean but that does not mean the world was covered with water.

That Kangaroos, echidnas and platypus swam to the middle east to be rescued then swam back.

You know what?

We're fine. We had no damage, no flooding, no power cuts etc ; just a few twigs, branches, leaves etc which I hosed away 1st thing this morning.

IF YOU'RE STUPID ENOUGH TO LIVE TOO CLOSE TO A RIVER OR OCEAN, THEN YOU SHOULD EXPECT PROBLEMS WHEN SEVERE WEATHER HITS.

NO SYMPATHY HERE FOR THOSE WHO'VE LOST THEIR FRONT YARDS UP ON THE NORTHERN BEACHES.

..... OR THOSE WHO GOT FLOODED ALONG THE GEORGES RIVER AND FURTHER DOWN SOUTH.

I MEAN DUH!

Incidentally, all that flooding in suburban areas wasn't the fault of the sustained downpour but was entirely because of inadequate drainage systems and very poor maintenance practices.

Dead animals, branches, discarded plastic bottles, and MacDonald's take-away packaging, etc create blockages and serious narrowing of the underground piping because these are left unattended by council workers until flooding occurs.

I should have posted Really Captain Obvious.

My bad.

Also there are multi factorial reasons for the damage caused to these properties. It's not just poor drainage. Ok?

Now behave.

Suburban flooding is caused by the bath tub effect, you cannot instantly get rid of a massive amount of water via a small outlet immediately, you have to let it drain, if you pull the plug on your bath tub the water does not dissapear immediately does it?, it has to drain away over time, no amount of urban planning will stop flooding.

No doubt it contains stormwater pollution,  the foam itself is natural. I've seen it on remote parts of the coast

As an added attraction to the storm water pollution and filthy foam, is the sewerage that floats around Sydney Harbour.  Nothing like a Sunday sailing in the Harbour and instead of Dolphins, there is somebody's TURD bobbing along side ........ GROSS.

I was down the south east last year at a beach that is hundreds of k's away from any major civilization and it was covered in plastic and other assorted litter, I was shocked and saddened, obviously there is some sort of ocean current action going on that causes the sh!t to accumulate right there, most people will never even see it due to its remoteness, if the currents conspired to dump it at a beach in a capital city there would be an outcry.

Nothing like a Sunday sailing in the Harbour and instead of Dolphins, there is somebody's TURD bobbing along side ........ GROSS.

Bondi cigars are an internationally renowned phenomena of Sydney.

Is that what they are called these days?  Grin Grin

Yep.

They've been called Bondi Cigars for as long as I can remember.

And, coincidentally, a mate of mine was in a band called the Bondi Cigars.  https://bondicigars.com/

Fraid you're intel is many years out of date.
I've not seen a cigar or blind mullet Bondi since they switched on the deep ocean outfall 25 years ago. Yes there are some stormwater issues after heavy rain but for a city the size of Sydney our waters are bloody clean.
