Gale force winds, monster waves and heavy rain are expected to batter the east coast this weekend with conditions worsening until Sunday.

A low pressure system forming off the south-east Queensland coast tomorrow is predicted to travel slowly southward gaining intensity as it moves across the NSW coastline.

Some of the state's northern areas could be hit with up to 300mm of rain with the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) issuing flood warnings.

BOM forecaster Rebecca Kamitakahara told ninemsn severe weather is expected to bring gale force winds to many coastal regions.

"We are going to see some very big swell and dangerous surf conditions initially in the north and right along the coast until Sunday," she said.

"We are also going to see strong gale force winds developing right along the NSW coast."

"Generally speaking this is going to be a wet weekend across most of eastern NSW."

June 02, 2016: Flash flooding and gale force winds are expected to hit south-east Queensland in the next 48 hours, as a severe weather system moves across the state.

The BOM forecaster said the heavy rainfall was expected to increase by Sunday as the system travelled south.

"We are expecting a low pressure system off the south-east Queensland coast sometime tomorrow that will track slowly," Ms Kamitakahara said.

"We are going to see rainfall increase right across the east tomorrow morning."

Southeast Queensland residents are also in for some wild weather on Saturday, but forecasters say it might not be as bad as initially feared.

A strong upper trough is moving faster than expected, meaning reduced chances of flash flooding.

We're expecting 80+ mm tomorrow and maybe 40 or so Sunday.... about time.... might settle the wood smoke a bit..... in the middle of renovations and got stuff stacked everywhere... be out checking in the morning.  So far no wind or rain, only cloud.
