Five Aussie ISIS Busted Planning Boatride To Indo

Five terror suspects who allegedly planned to go by boat to Indonesia to join Islamic State in Syria are facing extradition from Cairns to Melbourne.

The five men, including Islamic preacher Musa Cerantonio, have been charged with terror offences after being arrested near Cairns on Tuesday towing a seven-metre fishing boat en route to Cape York in far North Queensland.

Attorney-General George Brandis says the five men, who are in custody, will face Cairns magistrates court on Monday when an application will be made to extradite them to Victoria.

The men, aged between 21 and 31, were charged overnight with one count each of making preparations for incursions into foreign countries to engage in hostile activities.

If found guilty, they face a maximum penalty of life in jail.

Senator Brandis confirmed that each of the men had had their passports cancelled several months ago by Foreign Minister Julie Bishop.

"These people had been under surveillance for quite some time - that's the reason their passports were cancelled because they had been under surveillance and their intentions to travel to the Middle East to engage in terrorist war fighting were known to the authorities," he told reporters on Sunday.

"When it became clear to them that they wouldn't be able to leave the country in an orthodox way, they remained under surveillance so that if they attempted to leave the country in this very unusual way they would be able to be stopped and they were."

I don't understated why they stopped them in the first place. ..

if they want to piss off to the M.E., let them go never to return. Now we're going to spend millions keeping them in jail, where they'll recruit other inmates into their extremism?

At the very least the navy could have used them for target practice once they were out at deep sea. Afterall, if they are joining ISIS, Australia as a part of the coalition of the willing is at was with ISIS and no one said the navy can't do it's part.

I agree in principle as most likely they're end up dead, but they may also kill innocents.

We have laws in place that forbids people to travel abroad to fight in other country's wars. This is a necessary law iMO, and it should be enforced. We have a moral obligation to prevent the supply and safe passage of combatants to a warzone that is creating enormous suffering and destruction. One of the key factors in the prolongation of the Syrian war is Turkey's refusal to clamp down on foreign jihadists using their country as the main route into Syria

I suppose you could always abandon your aussie citizenship and take up citizenship of the country you want to fight for (or a country that will allow you to fight for a non-state actor). Yes, its curbing a freedom, but in this case I don't think its a particularly bad thing. There's too many wars that are unnecessarily escalated by the participation of foreigners. Then you have to consider, if these foreign fighters are not fighting for our national interest, then how is it affecting our national interest? I think its inevitable that if you went carte blanche, somewhere along the line you'd get people participating in a war that threatens our national interest.

As much as I despise politicians dragging us into unnecessary wars, its better to have governments monopolising involvement in wars.
