Huh?

Not me.

And what's a health care card?

Trust me - cataract removal outside of a Teaching Hospital is around $6000 if you're an Aged Pensioner like I am. I've just recently gone through the drama.

That is nonsense, both my wife and i have had cataract surgery under Medicare (Free), the wait was less than 12 months!

Did you have the removals done at a public Teaching Hospital or at your ophthalmologist's private operating room?

With my Medicare Card and Pensioner Concession Card the operation by my ophthalmologist was to cost me $6000 - as stated by her.

Correct!

It's FREE! at a public Teaching Hospital but NOT FREE if the operation is done by an Ophthalmologist in his or her private practice.

Bought a big screen tv 10 years ago, and thought that my life was complete. Not really big screen, but better than that old box I used as a television. Hooked it up to my old cd player, and thought I had my own surround sound entertainment package going. The cd player, 17 years old, carked it on me. Bought a new one to hook up to my tv and dvd player. Much better sound system. Got a blu ray player, and left it in the package for over a year. Got it out, thinking about hooking it up. But then had the idea to let my tv fail to the point that I could not watch my movies, before I got a new tv to hook to the blu ray.

Seeing now that there are flat screen tvs around the place that cost less than half of what I paid in 2006. Slightly bigger screen and better picture quality too. Still, needing to wait a while to save some money to get a new tv.

An extra BIG advantage to having a flat digital TV is that you can record movies etc through your computer onto a memory stick and then play these through the USB socket on the TV.

Yep, finally got one. And I love it.

Second-hand, admittedly. And NOT paid-for with 'welfare money'
so don't even go there.

My eyes aren't too good these days, and I can't believe the difference
it makes over my old 26" LCD.

I can actually read the crawlers across the bottom of the screen, now.

of COURSE it was paid for by welfare money. you get welfare therefore it was paid for by taxpayers.  THANK YOU

You should see an optometrist and get some reading glasses, the $2-5 shops have them at cheaper rates for poor labor and green voters.

With old age the lenses in your eyes are not as flexible hence the difficulty in reading as you age.

Some people need a HUGE screen so that they can read the CC text as their hearing is shot.  Wink

IF you need glasses to watch TV and a different pair to read a book or use the computer and yet another pair to drive ..... you are just getting O.L.D. Cheesy

Sight is the first thing that deteriorates ... in most people.  Grin

Cataract surgery is VERY common after about 60. The wait is long, though, due to the "aging population" and I know someone who can NOT drive (temporarily) because she hasn't got the Annual Medical Certificate she needs after 75.

that is all very true.....sadly I am waiting for the operation...herb is putting all sorts of fear into me.. but I did ask the specialist who booked my op would he be doing it and he said yes... what else can anyone do..but take their word for it...

I have to say as long as its done well I dont care really....the thought of what they do is kind of scary but as you say its so common today... and I would think most of the smart arses that poke fun of the aged.. can all look forward to going down that street at some time... Grin Grin Grin

Don't be alarmed if the surgeon tells you he might temporarily take out one of your eye-balls to roll it across the floor for the Operating Room cat to play with. (Every Operating Room has a pet cat to lick up the ... er ... 'leftovers' from some of the more messy operations). Don't worry - he'll replace it before you wake up.  Cool

I had it done at a large public hospital (I would think it is a teaching hospital)

I was offered the $6000 option at a private hospital to speed up the wait if I wanted, the wait was only about six months so I didnt bother and took the free option.

It was done by (or under) the supervision of my specialist as I could hear him describing the operation to at least one other doctor.

Thank you for vindicating me.

No need to apologise.
