Bah.

Here is a nice post from Whirlpool:

Quote:
The problem with passive/fan type of cooling is that the temperature inside the cabinet will never get below the outside ambient temperature which means the electronics will have cope with temperatures of 40C+ degrees.

To keep the FTTN working in high temperatures

1. The electronics will be of high quality (military grade) expensive.
2. The speed get throttled back and maybe to a point where they shut down.
3. The cabinets use refrigerated cooling also expensive.

All not very nice options.

When designing a system and its critical you have to design for the worst possible conditions so the cabinets to operate at 50C degrees.

P.S. When Tasmania was connected to the national electricity the major power sub station was only designed to operate up to 35C degrees, first hot day came along and the sub station shutdown.

The node cabinets have heat exchangers in them which cannot cope with temperatures over 30°C.

So now it is a major power sub station and 35º.

Won't come anywhere near me in the near future.  I am in an ultra safe Liberal electorate therefore the Coalition are too busy running it in Labor electorates to try and get votes - so pitiful is their current support base

Another interesting post:

Quote:
WhatThe writes...
They wont last as long as the manufacturer states – the manufacturer of the battery states expected life under ideal conditions with ambient temperature (inside the cabinet) at 20c.

To determine the expected lifetime, the batteries are actually run at a high temperature (around 80 deg IIRC) until they fail (much less than a year).

The lifetime of 10 years at 25 deg is extrapolated from this figure.

The minister wanted smaller cabinets for political reasons. The engineers will have done their best to keep temperatures down, but management aided design (MAD) is not a great paradigm.

So Turncoat was worried about the public being upset by large cabinets so now all the electronics are crammed into tiny cabinets which have trouble coping with heat so the public is going to get upset by losing phone and internet on hot days.

Speeds will be reduced as the node tries to maintain service and will eventually shut down. When whole areas get cut over to the obsolete crap the heat inside the cabinets is going to be intense and then we get a series of 40°C+ days. You reckon the nodes won’t shut down then? Telstra RIMS do.

I love “management aided design (MAD)”  Grin Grin Grin

Nothing about FTTN cabinet failure at 30ºC as stated.

I did read it and a lot of the contributors at Whirlpool are very knowledgeable and work in this field.

Next summer with more nodes and more subscribers per node (assuming Malcolm doesn’t get a rush of common sense to the head) there will be many nodes shut down or operate at minimum level in the heat. Larger cabinets would have been better.

I did read of cabinets failing and the various techs I talked to all said the heat exchanger can only cope up to a certain temperature.

Will not affect me, I have no intention of subscribing to FTTN.

Yeah, trying to remember where I read it. Have a read of that NBN Aust website and see that FTTN is a bit of a disaster all round.
