Media ownership rules under review
Feb 25th, 2016 at 10:36am

Federal government on verge of scrapping ownership diversity rules

Quote:
Australia’s government is on the verge of changing media ownership laws that could result in greater consolidation in the industry. The cabinet has agreed in principle to the removal of two restrictions that are likely to lead to mergers and acquisitions.

I'm surprised there hasn't been a topic on this.

Sure, let's consider revising the rules. Make the print media more accountable, require owners of media in Australia to be Australian citizens (not dual citizens)...

I hoped this thread would be about selling off the ABC and SBS.

The Government shouldn't be in the media business their job is running the country.

The money we get from selling off and not having to prop up the ABC and SBS could be spent on health or education or even infrastructure.

Why?

The Government shouldn't be in the media business their job is running the country.
They don't run it (or didn't, until Sir Pository's odious reign). They hld it in trust for the public, who DO own it. And frankly, they're not making much of a fist of running the country.

The money we get from selling off and not having to prop up the ABC and SBS could be spent on health or education or even infrastructure.
You fall for the silly and incorrect 'either/or' scenario so much favoured by conservatives and the ignorant (same thing, really). It doesn't have to be one or the other.

If you had said destroying the ABC and SBS you would probally have been close. Looks as though Rupert has his eyes on something again.

Australia already has the most concentrated media landscape in the western world.

No wonder the Libs have no problem with News Corp gobbling up everybody, works for them, the entire Australian media becomes LNP Pravda.

It is not good for democracy or anybody else though.

The government should not be running any media, time to sell off the ABC and SBS.

Ratings show they won't be missed, it will save taxpayers over $1 billion a year which can be spent on hospitals, schools and infrastructure

The big media companies should be broken-up and sold-off to small/medium operators.

By force, if necessary.
