Conroy- Labor warships

Quote:
Labor has vowed to send Australian warships within 12 nautical miles of disputed islands in the South China Sea if it wins power.

Tensions are rising in the region after Beijing deployed a surface-to-air missile system on Woody Island, a contested territory it claims.

Shadow defence minister Stephen Conroy said there was no reason why Royal Australian Navy ships could not conduct freedom of navigation operations close to disputed territories in the South China Sea.
"The international treaties, the international laws of the sea, allow us to sail well within the 12 miles of all of these disputed territories," Senator Conroy told Capital Hill.

"At the moment, they are not recognised as anyone's territory and we can sail through legally, peacefully, through these alleged 12-mile limits.

"It's China that's trying to claim a 12-mile limit, outside of the international system.

"We can sail legally, peacefully, through these alleged 12 mile-limits. It's China that's trying to claim a 12-mile limit."

After Putin's actions brought down MH17?  What kind of coward are you? It is about time a few more politicians tackle this scumbag a bit more forcefully. Abbott's actions started the sanctions against Russia. The threat to shirtfront was a fabulous one and something that prompted at least one other Foreign PM to tell Putin what he REALLY thought of him.
