Neither Portugal nor Holland have legalised drugs.  They are put in place controls which appear to be working for the addicts, at least to the extent, they are no longer seen on streets.

No, they have not legalised it.

They have decriminilised it.
So it is more controllable.

Cods - sorry, it was not Turkey, it is Portugal.

Quote:
.........Drug use has declined overall among the 15- to 24-year-old population, those most at risk of initiating drug use, according to Transform.

There has also been a decline in the percentage of the population who have ever used a drug and then continue to do so:..........

.........HIV infection rates among injecting drug users have been reduced at a steady pace, and has become a more manageable problem in the context of other countries with high rates, as can be seen in this chart from a 2014 report by the European Monitoring Center for Drugs and Drug .......................

Good work, Sprint. It's nice to see you backing up your argument.

Sprint has pointed to at least two countries and I have provided evidence of the numerous states if you're too f.... Stupid to comprehend that get a five year old to explain it to you.

Good on you and Sprint.  What drug
s
(plural)?

Hi Aussie - from memory, The Netherlands has decriminilised heroin.
Portugal has decriminilised almost all drugs.

I could well be wrong. But take it as a starting point.

In holland, the 'appeal' of smack has reduced, new addiction rates are almost 0.
Old addict are given free smack by the govt. So they no longer commit crimes to fund their addiction.
Many of them are now bored with their lives as there is 'nothing to do.'

In Portugal, drug usage is dropping. Harm is reduced.
Courts are not jammed with pot smokers and the like.
It's better for society overall. It's not a complete success in every aspect, but it is an improvement.
Drugs are still restricted and allowable quantities are limited to a few days supply.
Again, I could be wrong, but take it as a starting point.

Excellent.

One thing that is often overlooked by the anti decriminalisation crowd is the fact that currently illegal drugs are very highly marketed in todays society, it is in the dealers best interest to "push" drugs onto people in order to get new customers, they have a very effective marketing strategy for two reasons, one is for profits but in most cases addicts become dealers and promoters of drugs to support their own habit.

Under decriminalisation their will be no more marketing of illegal drugs for sale, in the same way that there is no more advertising for cigarettes.

Strange. Every dealer I've ever known was very reluctant to hand out their details to new customers.

New customers usually have to beg and plead.

It's true, dear. Why do you think dealers are reluctant to take on new customers?

Remember, there are no right or wrong answers.

So broadly speaking there are three main groups that are against the decriminalisation of drugs ...

1. Those that are involved and rely upon a paycheck from the prison industrial complex, Judges, Lawyers, Police and Prison guards as at least 50% of all crime is drug related.

2. Drug dealers themselves that would have to trade their sports cars and jetskis in for the dole queue.

3. The ignoramus's that have not done any research on the subject at all preferring instead to get on their high horse called Ignorance and yell Hi Ho Ignorance away.  Grin

Yep, that about sums it up.

I might also add those who see hemp cloth/fibre, hemp as a fuel etc as a threat, and Big Pharma.

Although they could probably be accommodated in your first example.

Yes, often I think of 'who profits from a situation.'
Sometimes it gives unexpected answers.

You would not immediately think lawyers would support the illegality of pot.

more. I would estimate 80 percent. Amphetamine use is the elephant in the room.

nah, it a very naive assumption. Someone who has a job in law enforcement or the criminal justice system isnt going to lose their job overnight if crime decreases.

Interesting, it'ld be hard to get a figure on it.
Include alcohol as one of the drugs, yep, it'ld have to be high.

I've always been opposed to decriminalising drugs, but I just spent 4 days on the road where I was forced to listen to ABC radio, and some of the arguments for decriminalisation are pretty compelling. I'd have to say I'm now a convert.

People who peddle ice should be hanged.
It destroys lives faster than any other drug.

Once you have a close look at all the facts its hard to deny that decriminalisation is the answer.
