Personally, I've never thought of the term 'ape' as a racial slur. I didn't actually realise that it was widely used as an insult particularly tailored to offend black people until i did some research on the topic.

Perhaps you should do the same.

Another thing you could do, is learn what the term 'general' means in this context.

i.e. "affecting or concerning all or most people or things; widespread."
