so the story is that the media got it wrong, not the person who made the original claim? .. who'd a thunk it that the media 'embellishes' a story.

I agree with the first part, disagree with the second. It's lying to sell more papers.

The senate enquiry made mention of false reporting by refugee advocates. They brought these false allegations to attention and the left in the media seized on it. It was a combination of people concocting a lie.

well the haters here certainly seized on it not waiting a second to defame and draw conclusions.
