A five-year-old was not raped on Nauru, immigration officials say

The five-year-old boy allegedly raped on Nauru doesn't even exist, a Senate committee in Canberra has been told that.

“There is no five-year-old child, it’s a figment,” immigration department secretary Michael Pezzullo said this morning.

Refugee advocates seized on the rape claim ahead of the failed High Court challenge to Australia’s offshore processing arrangements.

But department official Cheryl-Anne Moe said the child at the centre of the sexual assault claims was actually more than twice that age, and they hadn't been raped.

“It was physical skin-to-skin contact,” she said.
