Why didn't they learn how to mass produce food by extensively farming. It never occurred to them. They never used the wheel, metal etc etc etc. The world left them behind like the Neanderthal. They are an old form of man isolated in Australia who came in contact with a more modern variety who out competed them. Nature. Nothing will turn it back and the problem will always be there because they can't compete in the modern world.

If there is a tale for moving from hunter/gatherer to farming, it's the Garden of Eden story. Now you will live by the sweat of your brow... etc.

Man must survive, that is the fundamental. You cannot progress if you don't exist. They were doing fine in their environment.
In our world was it inevitable? Yep. Yes it's natural and has been done a million times. The part some forget is that we can rise above our nature.
