Do you have a personal philosophy
Jan 31st, 2016 at 3:46pm

I don't mean social justice or equality or some label like that.
Most people, nearly everybody believes in those things.

I mean is there some core position or disposition that governs how you stand on issues whatever they are

My basic position would be that I'm a contrarian. If the conventional wisdom or the general opinion is A then I will usually be B. Not always of course because I'm even contrarian about being contrarian.

I am opposed to the herd instinct. It might get sheep and lemmings to where they want to be but I don't think it has any value in relation to the truth.

I've probably been this way since about the age of 12. When in the 1950s & 60s the accepted wisdom was conservatism I was radical. When that started to change so did I.
I generally have the same approach to popular causes, entertainments, in fact anything it's possible to have an opinion about.

It's also part of this philosophy, if you could call it that, that I don't seek or require agreement from others for views or actions I take from time to time.
In fact too much agreement might lead me to question my position

So that's me, what about you.

Don't hold on to pet theories. They can bite. Keep an open mind and be ruthlessly impartial. If the facts say that I am right, stick to my guns.

If the facts prove me wrong, admit it freely regardless of the consequences and move on.

not sure if it qualifies as a philosophy, but one expression I always try to live my life by is

'don't do anything you may regret,
don't regret anything you may have done'.

Pursue truth.

To the best of your current ability, always respect and defend what you understand to be true/truthful.

I believe that, that, is our purpose.

Our reason for being here.

Treat this life as a test, of your respect for truth.

Don't believe that everything that you [believe that you] can actually 'see', is what it appears to be.

And certainly don't readily believe everything you are told.

Always test, always question.

QUESTION;
Do you believe that you can mostly trust your own perception/understanding, of what is real/true ?

If you are like most people, you will make some serious mistakes in this life,
....everyone does.

Making some serious mistakes, is not the worst thing that a person can do in this life.       !!!

Not sure if either of those is possible.
Some actions have to be taken even though you know they are regrettable.

And we all make mistakes which it is right and proper we should regret. This is part of the process of trying to avoid making the same mistakes again.

Actually, I'm a couldntgiveashitarian.

I've probably been this way since about the age of 40.

I think you miss the whole point of it.

No, i think what your point is, is very clear.

'don't do anything you may regret,' = = I don't do anything which is not appropriate, because i am, today, the proper arbiter of what is proper conduct.

'don't regret anything you may have done'. = = I don't need to feel regret, or to apologise, for any of my past conduct.     [....if i make a 'mistake', no-one else need be concerned with what i have done,    ....because, again, i am always the proper arbiter of my own conduct.]

I think it's more like don't spend your life living with regrets. If you've done something you regret, learn from it and move on.

Anyone who says they have no regrets is either lying, or has led a rather dull existence.

Matthew 7:12
Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.

QUESTION;
1/ If i lived among/within a society of my peers, and, 2/ if am NOT a murderer today, BUT, if i were to become a murderer tomorrow,     ...would i want [and expect] others to forgive me for such a crime ?

.....i.e. want it, because i [selfishly] wanted others to forgive what i had done,     ....so that i could avoid the consequence(s) of my actions/choices ?

ALTERNATIVELY, [and, if i was actually a moral person] what response from others should i be prepared to suffer [and expect], if i [chose to,] became a murderer ?

Murder.

Not negligent manslaughter.

Never old.

Listen to your heart.....

Deuteronomy 8:2
And thou shalt remember all the way which the LORD thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no.

.

Not all men are worthy [....of our trust].

It is foolishness [i.e. it would be irresponsible of us, as moral beings] to give what is holy, to the ungodly.

Matthew 7:6
Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.
