Millions of women around the world are forced to wear full body coverings. So why lie about it making them cooler?

And the ones we had for work only had a similar skin contact area to a headband.

Here's what I had to say about womens full body coverings:

Quote:
The female ones go too far, and are bloody stupid.  They look like a heavy cloth, don't allow the skin to breathe and seem to always be black.  It's like they tried to create the most impractical, uncomfortable item of clothing possible.

Not exactly glowing praise, is it?

The tea towel over your head and shoulders is bloody stupid, as is the suggestion it is cooler than a broad brimmed hat because it 'wicks away the sweat'. The stiff color the guy in your example is also stupid. My bet is he only wears that in air conditioned comfort. It is the Arab equivalent of a penguin suit.

Yes, to be honest, it's probably more to do with air circulation and the fabric used, but the end result is the same - greater comfort in the hot sun that an akubra.

Maybe so. I don't care, it was one of the first results on google, not a particular ghutra I'd had my eye on.

So you think a tea-towel covering your head and shoulders gives more air circulation than an akubra? And you think this because it is a light tea-towel? If you were arguing it is better than a plastic bag over your head you might have a point.

An akubra traps in all the heat because of its design and fabric, and doesn't keep the sun from baking the crap out of your neck and back.  Ever hear the phrase 'cotton kills'?  Its because cotton, when wet, is excellent at cooling you down.  Great in hot weather, deadly in cold.  Akubras are not made from cotton - they're made from animal skin(!) but ghutras often are.

But by all means, wear your akubra if it works for you.

Interesting discussion lads, my take if I had to cross a desert I would like to be in Arab attire, those guys have had enough time to work out what works best in that environment.

I found that when I used to paint outside in the hot sun, I'd often hang a cloth (often old tea towels) under my cap so that it covered the back and sides of my neck (much like the arabs wear).  It worked much better at keeping me cool than a hat or cap ever did on their own. I think there is something to be said for the Arabs attire.
I occasionally wear an Akubra now when out in the gardens, but I find that it traps the heat and makes things worse so more often than not, the Akubra comes off after the first half an hour. The only reason I wear it at all is to stop the wife complaining that I wasted my money on it. I have to say though, The Akubra does work well in the rain though.

Have you ever noticed it wicking away the seat from the headband area? Why does it not count when an akubra does it? Also, does it trap the heat around the front, back and sides of the head, as well as the neck and shoulders, the way your example does?

That's what the brim is for.

I usually choose a cheap straw hat if given the choice. I tend to loose them.

That's your problem right there. You may look cool in a cap, but you lost it with the dangly rags. Caps also tend to have as little ventilation as an akubra. You have a layer of bone, skin, hair then the thick fabric of the cap all insulating your skull. Also, the cap heats up from the sun and conducts the heat back in through the compressed mat of wet hair (much like the Arab example honky gave earlier). A good straw hat will only contact your scalp around the headband, and if it is old enough will have ventilation holes on the top, not that they really need them with the loose weave.

firstly, when working out in the sun all day with temps in the mid to high 30's I really don't care how cool it looks. You really think painters in their whites worry about looking cool?

secondly, I used caps in my example, but I've tried all of them at some point or other. From straw hats, Acubras, cotton caps with rims (sorta like gilligan uses in gilligans island), I even tried a sombrero once  ... you name it, if it was made for sun protection, I've probably tried it. For me, what worked best at keeping me cool in the sun was a cap with a rag hanging of it.

Caps work best not because they look cool, but because wide brim hats get in the way when climbing ladders or scaffolding and when trying to paint under eaves etc. Nothing worse then painting one section only to find that your hats rim has rubbed against it as you've stretched to reach the other direction

Ah. That must be why the Arabs use a similar device.

Akubras are made from bunnies, aren't they?

In their case, I expect it has more to do with the sand and wind .... of course if you had stopped to think about it, you might have come up with that on your own.

You must be referring to my earlier post where I mentioned sand as the likely reason. Or for the women - rapists and black eyes.

How do you think that wafer thin tea-towel fares in the wind? I think it would have trouble handling getting to close to the air conditioning downdraft.

I think it would stop the sand whipping against their necks and faces ...
