For what its worth, these sort of impulsive behaviours are probably a matter of teaching "self control"

again, the best time to teach a lesson is as soon as practical after the behaviour occurs.

a young colt is going to try exactly the same types of behaviours with all the mares in the paddock
(so we should see this behaviour as an 'animal" instinct).

within 2 seconds of trying this on, the young colt will be delivered a double barrell blow by the mare in question (who only mates with alphas) and if the alpha sees it the young colt will recieve further immediate harsh retribution.

in reality, the best solution would be for the alphas (the lifegaurds) hold the young colt down (restricting a horses movement is how you get it to submit) and then for the offended mares to deliver a series of kicks and exhibit dominant behaviour over the young male.

he would then be chased off from the herd (fatal for a herd animal), so he could then be placed in dark prison cell for a week in solitary.

he would come out reformed and the herd could get back to a healthy herd dynamic
