No Lee you are wrong. It has EVERYTHING to do with climate.

Only insofar as any weather event impacts climate. It, of itself, is not climate, but climate related; like drought, floods etc.

You can't backpedal now lee - everything is out in the open

You owe The_Barnacle a written public apology

So 238.6 mm up to the first week of January. Average for Dec-Feb 298mm. So a way to go before it hits average. I doubt that would qualify it as a below average summer, with 7 weeks to go.

You see this illustrates your lack of understanding of basic principles quite well. First you choose weather data for Sydney - a single point. You'd get a better picture by taking the figures for the Eastern seaboard, or at least more than just a single location. There can be a great deal of variation between locations, and some almost point sources like Sydney may very well buck the trend. Just because Sydney has more population doesn't make it more representative  Grin

Secondly you fail to understand the statistical nature of the SOI effects. An El Niño event may be associated with a drier than average period, but not necessarily. It's a statistical relationship. Google how the SOI is calculated. I'm not going to explain it to you.

It's similar to saying that your grandfather smoked 3 packets of smokes a day but died at 93 from natural causes. Statistics will be able to predict how many cases like your hypothetical grandfather should exist.

I as merely illustrating a point.
So you want me to include rainfall figures for the rest of NSW and Queensland?  Why don't you do it to prove me wrong?

You still don't get it. The second point.

Over much of Australia, but particularly eastern Australia, El Niño events are associated with an increased probability of drier conditions.

Yep, not increased probability of wet weather.
