As for the microplastics - do you trawl with micro-filters? What happens to the by-catch?

Err, the by-catch would probably be glad for a more merciful death than starving to death or blocked to buggery. Why, what do you care.?

I agree the wealthy account for much more waste than the poor.. that is an obvious conclusion, and somewhat irrelevant. Too many people, of all descriptions, are responsible. That has been my view for decades Deathray.

There are too many people on earth. Humans are just out of control organisms,  inhabiting the skin of our mother, BUT, using your analogy.... causing more harm as organisms, than any other existing currently.

Don't you see?  the struggle goes well beyond wealth, or class, or entitlement...  it really is that we humans have a collective deathwish, disguised as capitalism (?) among many other cults.,, so that any harm, regardless of consequence , is encouraged in the name of growth. A particularly skewed and foolish objective, when achieving it lays waste to our mother Earth

Sure, population doesn't help but I was just trying to say that the greed of the matter is in the exact fact that capitalism depends on keeping the poor poor and then giving them a lotto ticket to add customers and call it immigration.

This whole game could be seen as a consequence of impending doom caused by population, sure.

*Sure....they're anti competitive as any subsidised job is.  It wouldn't be there without the tax payer.  Very damned difficult for a brainwashed collectivist to understand that I know....  (swaggy) *

Funny - not. Micro-filters would take everything.

I think they would probably prefer not.

Why do I care? I am a fisherman of sorts. I like fishing. It is not even imperative to catch fish every time. But occasionally it is nice. otherwise it is not fishing.

Ah, yes. Cargo cult - the climate change that is allegedly sinking islands. Please send recompense.

In a timely newsbite.,
I see there is a person, just one, who has put together other people to scoop out this plastic infestation from the Pacific. That is the goal.

Specially designed scoops and the Will of people to try to reduce this horror of human detritus is inspiring.

Micro-filter scoops? More detail please.

Like I said Lee.. it was a newsbite..very little detail on the actual scoop... although the scoops were shown in the film coverage of this endeavour.

YOU are the one who said micro-filter. However, I imagine you could find out more about it if you want.

I just find it an interesting confluence of ideas, given recent posts on these plastic 'masses' in our oceans.

Well I don't have one. I can't even remember which TV channel I saw it on.

This young man was in his 20's, a person of French extraction.
It may have been Seven Early News Qld, or another free - to - Air News.  I don't pay for TV.

It was one of them. Perhps 10 ?

Nevertheless, heartening to hear that someone has the heart to make an effort.!!

Oh and I remember more of the content, so it seems this Pacific garbage dump as mapped by these doers is 1.4 milliom klm in diameter. Larger than the state of Texas.

'Charles Moore, an American oceanographer who discovered the "Great Pacific Garbage Patch" or "trash vortex", believes that about 100 million tons of flotsam are circulating in the region. Marcus Eriksen, a research director of the US-based Algalita Marine Research Foundation, which Mr Moore founded, said yesterday: "The original idea that people had was that it was an island of plastic garbage that you could almost walk on. It is not quite like that. It is almost like a plastic soup. It is endless for an area that is maybe twice the size as continental United States." '

http://www.independent.co.uk/environment/green-living/the-worlds-rubbish-dump-a-...

' Estimates of size range from 700,000 square kilometres (270,000 sq mi) (about the size of Texas) to more than 15,000,000 square kilometres (5,800,000 sq mi) (0.41% to 8.1% of the size of the Pacific Ocean), or, in some media reports, up to "twice the size of the continental United States".[20] Such estimates, however, are conjectural given the complexities of sampling and the need to assess findings against other areas. Further, although the size of the patch is determined by a higher-than-normal degree of concentration of pelagic debris, there is no standard for determining the boundary between "normal" and "elevated" levels of pollutants to provide a firm estimate of the affected area.'

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Pacific_garbage_patch#Estimates_of_size

'If something isn't done, he says, the island will increase in size by a factor of ten every two to three years — making in time something more akin to an actual, solid island. "The consequence of putting that much stuff shading the surface of the ocean is unknown," he says. "We don't know the harm." '

Moore again in   http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=89099470

'For NOAA, a national science agency, separating science from science fiction about the Pacific garbage patch (and other "garbage patches") is important when answering people's questions about what it is and how we should deal with the problem.

(For the record, no scientifically sound estimates exist for the size or mass of these garbage patches.)'

response.restoration.noaa.gov/about/media/how-big-great-pacific-garbage-patch-sc...

'There is a lot of plastic trash floating in the Pacific Ocean, but claims that the “Great Garbage Patch” between California and Japan is twice the size of Texas are grossly exaggerated, according to an analysis by an Oregon State University scientist.

Further claims that the oceans are filled with more plastic than plankton, and that the patch has been growing tenfold each decade since the 1950s are equally misleading, pointed out Angelicque “Angel” White, an assistant professor of oceanography at Oregon State.

“There is no doubt that the amount of plastic in the world’s oceans is troubling, but this kind of exaggeration undermines the credibility of scientists,” White said. “We have data that allow us to make reasonable estimates; we don’t need the hyperbole. Given the observed concentration of plastic in the North Pacific, it is simply inaccurate to state that plastic outweighs plankton, or that we have observed an exponential increase in plastic.” '

http://oregonstate.edu/ua/ncs/archives/2011/jan/oceanic-%E2%80%9Cgarbage-patch%E...

'MYTH: All this plastic is killing animals.
FACT: Some animals are being harmed, but others are thriving. Here's why that could be a problem.'

'MYTH: The plastisphere is killing the ocean.
FACT: The plastisphere is an ecosystem out of balance.'

http://io9.gizmodo.com/5911969/lies-youve-been-told-about-the-pacific-garbage-pa...

So the idea of the "Great Pacific Garbage patch" is bunkum. It hasn't been mapped

So you believe NOAA on climate change but not the "great Pacific Garbage Patch"?

Bizarre.
