Here's a classic, but you have to listen carefully. "I bought, or they bought, something along, with whatever." It should be "I brought." It is endemic. You will hear it from Television announcers as well as the general public. We got it from the Brits. A good place to hear it is from the often plummy mouthed experts on Antique Roadshow. I learned it in school, and it took some effort to unlearn it.

Of course using bad English in speech or writing is more than just an education issue in Australia.
It's also in part a "tall poppy" issue. People don't like to demonstrate a capacity to speak or write well in many cases for fear they will attract social criticism for "being better than they ought to be".

Well I say such attitudes are counter productive in many ways and those who hold them can screw themselves.

yeah Muttley ... I'm sure that someone who says 'their' instead of 'there' does so because their argument is weak ...

Were you born stupid or was it something you studied for?

Except that these days you have to allow for predictive text. I find mistakes I didn't make. Google made me do it.

But most of all, we haven't all had the benefit of the same education and we didn't all get the same start.
Doesn't mean you don't have the right to an opinion.

And highly educated opinions are not always the better ones anyway.

I've long held the policy that I prefer to listen to what a man is saying (different context back then) rather than the way he is saying it.  Cool

An' 'at's roight, two, bruvvas...

Does 'paid out' spell the same, or is it 'payed out'?  As in 'really paid him out, eh?  (chortle, chortle)...

I don't know why people get those mixed up.  I was taught that bring = brought and buy = bought.  Rather easy to remember.

Doesn't matter if you were born in Australia, India, USA, Canada, Kenya, South Africa, or a couple of dozen other places, it's still the English language.
And it's a brilliant language and it deserves the best treatment it can get.
In fact some of the best English speakers are in India.

I doubt the "tall poppy" issue has anything to do with people who don't speak/understand proper English.

When I was at school we had English Composition and English Literature.  Two entirely different subjects and in English Composition we had Grammar (or Grandma  Wink) drummed into us.

However, the Aussie dialect is renown to be very lazy and it has nothing to do with how "posh" you speak.  TV News readers mispronounce words .... and even an Australian Prime Minister got certain pronunciations way off beam.  Grin
