Seasonal fruit

When I was a kid, seasonal fruit was what you got, unless you count cans. Nowadays of course the supermarkets give you what you want all year round but it doesn't taste like fruit, I think anyway, unless you still buy what's in season. Even then you might be getting what's been stored for nine months.

Just coming to the end of home grown navel oranges.Had one a minute ago. They have been brilliant this year which I guess is down to all the rain. Not even supposed to be able to grow them here.

Noticed that the Packham pears from the supermarket are beautiful right now if you give them a couple of days to ripen.

Must get a book to note down the best times for the various fruits instead of just taking a chance as per usual.

Know the enemies of a civil society by their public behaviour, by their fraudulent claim to be liberal-progressive, by their propensity to lie and, above all, by their attachment to authoritarianism.

seasonal fruit is the best ... I try to avoid fruit out of season, it has no flavour and has usually been chemically ripened.

Doesn't always work though, the kids have gotta have their bananas  Cheesy Cheesy

When politicians offer you something for nothing, or something that sounds too good to be true, it's always worth taking a careful second look.

Pears and apples are cool stored and if its done well you still get a good product, especially pears.
They over store apples and they try and keep a narrow range of products on the shelves for too long.

Red and golden delicious should not be stored , full stop.
But that means we could only grow a tiny percentage of them.
The best long storing red apple is lady Williams, (one of the parents of Pink Lady and Sundowner)
The supermarkets no longer want Lady Williams tho, so they try and over store Pink lady.
Sundowner is a better apple for storage than Pink lady, however growers have destroyed it by picking it too early.
Red Fuji is an ugly apple but it stores quite well also.
Probably no varieties should be stored passed about mid December (it can be done but not well)

If you look at the coles web site they show where they are sourcing fruit and veg.

You see that they source from Australia when it is in season but from some other place when it is not in season in Australia. They get a lot from the US surprisingly or the were before the AUD was sunk.

Mangoes are just coming into season and at this time the are just a little sour, I rather like them like that. This is common to many types of fruit and veg. Early season Tomato and most citrus can be a bit sour as well.

when they put those little stickers on them why not have the picked by date....we are after all led to believe these  are FRESH FOOD PEOPLE..and its nothing like fresh..

fruit tastes much nicer when it ripens on the tree/vine...gas ripened fruit has no taste..

bananas out of season are pitiful..
