POPE FRANCIS: ‘WHEN THE DEVIL NUMBS YOUR CONSCIENCE, HE HAS WON’

...
By THOMAS D. WILLIAMS, PH.D.9 Oct 2015

Pope Francis returned to one of his favorite topics Friday morning, telling his hearers that the devil seeks above all to become master of their consciences, so they no longer can tell right from wrong.

The Gospel reading at Mass spoke of Jesus casting out devils, and the Pharisees accusing him of driving out demons by the power of the Beelzebul, the prince of demons. It also spoke of a devil returning after being cast out, bringing other demons with it and setting up shop in the house where it had been before.

In his homily in the chapel at the Saint Martha residence, the Pope said that in the spiritual life
“temptations always return, the evil spirit never gets tired.” If he has been kicked out once, he is patient, waiting to return, and “If you let him in, you fall into a worse situation.”

In fact, Francis said, in the gospel story, at first it was clear that it was the devil who was causing problems. But afterward,
“The evil one conceals himself, and comes with his very polite friends, knocking at the door, asking permission, but then moves in and spends time with the man and, little by little, starts giving the orders.”

With his “good manners,” Francis said, the devil makes the man fall into moral relativism, calming his conscience.

We start saying things like “This happens everywhere” and “We are all sinners,” Francis said. Yet “When we say everybody, we mean nobody,” he said. “And so we live this worldliness that is the child of the evil spirit.”

“Calming the conscience, numbing the conscience, this is a great evil,” he said.

“When the devil manages to numb your conscience he has won a real victory,” Francis said, because “he has become the master of your conscience.”

The Pope said that the key to combatting the devil is discernment and vigilance. We need to be able to discern situations, he said, to see what comes from God and what comes from the devil who “always tries to deceive” and to “make us choose the wrong path.”

The Christian cannot just accept anything, but must “discern and look well to see where things come from, and what their root is,” he said.

Francis said that the Church “always encourages us to examine our conscience: What happened in my heart today, why? Did this well-mannered devil visit me today with his friends?”

“Where do these comments, these words, these teachings come from, who says this? Discern and keep watch, so as not to let in the one who deceives, seduces and fascinates,” he said.

“We ask the Lord for this grace,” he said.

Pope warns against conspiracy theories of Vatican skullduggery

...

October 8, 2015 10:58 AM

...

Vatican City (AFP) - Pope Francis has warned bishops at a global Church meeting on the family not to be taken in by conspiracy theories, as conservatives and liberals reportedly engage in Machiavellian attempts to manipulate the synod.

Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi on Thursday confirmed reports that the pontiff had warned Catholic bishops and cardinals behind closed doors on Tuesday not to get caught up in "the hermeneutic of conspiracy".

The phrase, better translated as conspiracy theories or a conspiratorial mentality, comes amid concerns within the conservative camp that new methodology being used in the three-week synod -- approved by Francis -- favours the liberal wing who want the Church to be more welcoming to homosexuals and remarried divorced people.

There were rumours in the run-up to the summit that a preliminary synod on the family last year was "rigged", with progressives publishing without warning an early report seen as revolutionary in its opening to lesbian and gay believers.

The draft text was spiked by enraged conservatives, but reports that the agenda this year has been stitched up to make sure the most contentious issues will not be discussed until the last moment -- when no-one has the time or energy left to argue -- have fuelled fresh fears.

"There seems to be a mounting tendency on all sides to suspect skullduggery and underhanded tactics," Vatican expert John Allen wrote in Cruxnow ahead of the start of the synod last week.

Indeed, he warned, in the end "the synod may be defined not just by disagreements on substance, but also suspicions of Machiavellian manoeuvres along the way".

Rebel cardinals accuse pope of stacking synod cards

By Angus MacKinnon

Vatican City (AFP) - Conservative cardinals have accused Pope Francis of stacking the cards against them in an ongoing battle over issues including the Church's approach to gays and to divorced and remarried believers, it emerged Monday.

In a letter sent to the pontiff on October 5, the opening day of a Church synod on the family, a group of cardinals described procedures for three weeks of discussions as "designed to facilitate predetermined results on important disputed questions."

The ostensibly private (but quickly leaked) letter was delivered to the pope by Australian Cardinal George Pell and reportedly signed by peers including the archbishops of Toronto and New York, Thomas Collins and Timothy Dolan, and arch-Vatican conservative Carlo Caffarra, the archbishop of Bologna.

A day later, without making any reference to the letter, Francis made an unscheduled intervention in the synod discussions to warn participants not to be taken in by "spiritually unhelpful" conspiracy theories.

And in comments that now look like a slapdown of a challenge to his authority, he also pointedly stressed that he had personally approved the methodology for three weeks of talks intended to reshape Catholic teaching on a broad range of questions related to family life.

- 'Appointed not elected' -

The cardinals' letter, drafted in English, was published on Monday by Italian website www.chiesa.espressonline.it.

It set out the conservative camp's fear that the synod's procedures favour liberals who want the Church to be more welcoming to homosexuals and remarried divorced people.

They said a working document intended to be a synthesis of views from a first round of talks last year needs "substantial reflection and reworking" and cannot serve as a basis for a final document this year.

They attacked the decision for most of the discussions to be held in small groups with the only votes scheduled at the end when it will be "too late in the process for a full review and serious adjustment of the text."

And they complained that the committee charged with drafting the document has been "appointed, not elected, without consultation".

Crowds wait for the arrival of Pope Francis at the Capitol building in Washington, DC on September 2 …
They concluded: "It is unclear why these procedural changes are necessary. A number of fathers feel the new process seems designed to facilitate predetermined results on important disputed questions."

There was confusion over exactly how many cardinals had signed the letter -- the initial figure was put at 13 by the usually reliable website which published it. But at least three said Monday that they had not put their name to it.

The implied accusation of debate-rigging and committee stitch-ups will exacerbate fears expressed by a number of Vatican watchers that this synod is set to be remembered as much for the spectacle of the Church washing its dirty linen in public as for any reform or innovation in its approach to family-related issues.

- Conclusion uncertain -

And the cardinals, in their letter, hinted that the wounds caused will fester indefinitely if the pope pushes ahead with his desire to end the ban on Catholics who have divorced and then remarried in civil ceremonies from taking communion.

They say that allowing that issue -- which they see as requiring an unacceptable change to doctrine -- to dominate discussions would "inevitably raise even more fundamental issues" about how the Church responds to changes in social culture.

Francis addressed this concern in his October 6 statement, saying there was no question of opening a debate on Church doctrine on the indissolubility of marriage.

The synod is due to finish on October 25. But, ironically, it is now unclear whether the heated discussions will lead to the publication of final conclusions.

Francis has declined to confirm what his plans are on that score.

Formally, he does not have to be bound by the synod's outcome but ignoring it would carry the risk of exacerbating the divisions highlighted by the unusually rebellious tone of the cardinals' letter.

No. They must suffer for the remainder of their earthly lives and live with the fear that they are going to a burning bed of fire for all eternity.

Pope asks forgiveness after sex scandals rock Vatican and Rome

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Francis asked for forgiveness on Wednesday for scandals at the Vatican and in Rome, an apparent reference to two cases of priests and gay sex revealed this month during a major meeting of bishops.
"Today ... in the name of the Church, I ask you for forgiveness for the scandals that have occurred recently either in Rome or in the Vatican," Francis said in unprepared remarks during his weekly general audience in St. Peter's Square.
"I ask you for forgiveness," he said before tens of thousands of people, who broke into applause. The pope then read his prepared address and did not elaborate.
Asked about the comments, Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi could not say which scandals the pope had in mind but said Francis wanted to reach out to ordinary people who are "disturbed or pained" when they read about scandals caused by "the Church or men of the Church".
There have been two scandals involving the Vatican and the Church in Rome in the past two weeks.
On Oct. 3, a Polish monsignor working in the Vatican's doctrinal office since 2003 held a packed news conference in which he disclosed that he was gay and had been living with another man for years.
The Vatican dismissed Monsignor Krzysztof Charamsa, a theologian, from his job there as well as from teaching assignments in pontifical universities in Rome.
A spokesman said at the time that Charamsa's high-profile coming out on the eve of a meeting of world bishops at the Vatican was "grave and irresponsible". It accused him of trying to exert "undue media pressure" on the bishops' debate on family issues, including the Church's position on gays.
After he was fired, Charamsa gave interviews to Spanish and Italian media in which he criticized the Church's rule on celibacy for the clergy.
The pope also appeared to be referring to a scandal exposed in the Italian media last week about an order of priests who run a parish in a well-to-do neighborhood in Rome.
Parishioners in the Santa Teresa d'Avila parish wrote to local Church officials alleging that a clergyman there had had encounters with "vulnerable adults". Newspapers said these took place in an adjacent park often frequented by male prostitutes.
According to the letter published in the media, parishioners said they had assembled evidence about the clergyman's illicit activities and were furious to discover he had been transferred to another part of Italy instead of being disciplined.
Since his election in 2013, the pope has asked forgiveness for sexual abuse of the children by the clergy and for the Church's treatment of Protestants and indigenous people in the course of its history.

Pope says it is wrong to equate Islam with violence

By Philip Pullella | Reuters – Sun, 30 Nov, 2014

ABOARD THE PAPAL PLANE (Reuters) - Pope Francis said on Sunday that equating Islam with violence was wrong and called on Muslim leaders to issue a global condemnation of terrorism to help dispel the stereotype.
Francis, the leader of 1.2 billion Roman Catholics, told reporters aboard his plane returning from a visit to Turkey that he understood why Muslims were offended by many in the West who automatically equated their religion with terrorism.
Francis' predecessor, Benedict XVI, caused storms of protest throughout the Islamic world in 2006, when he made a speech that suggested to many Muslims that he believed Islam espoused violence.
Benedict said he had been misunderstood and apologized. But this year, the image of a violent religion has once more been promoted by Islamic State, who have seized swathes of Syria and Iraq, slaughtering or driving out Shi'ite Muslims, Christians and others who do not share their radical brand of Sunni Islam.
The Argentine pope, who has been trying to foster cooperation with moderate Islam in order to work for peace and protect Christians in the Middle East, said it was wrong for anyone to react to terrorism by being "enraged" against Islam.
"You just can’t say that, just as you can’t say that all Christians are fundamentalists. We have our share of them (fundamentalists). All religions have these little groups," he said.

What is the price of sainthood? Vatican officials made a startling discovery shortly after Pope Francis was elected in 2013: outside payments were routinely made to a small office in the Holy See to boost the prospects of a candidate for canonisation.
The overall cost to the Vatican involved in creating a new saint can be as high as €500,000 — and in one case hit €750,000 —
because of the lengthy historical due-diligence involved in analysing a candidate’s suitability, including whether he or she has performed any miracles.

But those external contributions from individuals or groups — worth up to €40,000 — helped speed up the process. The trouble is they were often kept off the books and unaccounted for by the so-called postulators who worked in the sainthood office.
Vatican officials were forced to take the dramatic step of freezing the postulators’ accounts after they refused to hand over any documents.
The episode stands among the most damaging revelations from two books based on leaked documents — Avarice by Emanuele Fittipaldi and Merchants in the Temple by Gianluigi Nuzzi — published this week, which have heaped further indignity on the Roman Catholic Church as it tries to rebuild its credibility.
The publications, rife with vulgar details of avarice and mismanagement, have raised questions over the pope’s ability to deliver lasting change to the city state’s notoriously murky governance, especially on the economic front.
They have also brought back a scent of scandal to the Holy See, reminiscent of the last days of Pope Benedict XVI’s tenure, when the German pontiff’s own butler was detained and tried for leaking confidential information. That scandal was known as “Vatileaks” — and this week what seemed to be its sequel burst into the open.
“Those who are less than enamoured of the current pope . . . are hoping its main effect will be to stop his reforming pontificate dead in its tracks,” said Robert Mickens, editor-in-chief of Global Pulse, the Catholic website.
