The Mechanic...
Aug 30th, 2015 at 8:04pm

In March 1945, a truck mechanic (No. 230873) in the Women's Auxiliary Territorial Service, based at the Mechanical Transport Training Section, Camberley, Surrey, received a visit from her parents and her sister. Her parents just happened to be King George VI and the Queen, and her sister was Princess Margaret.

That truck mechanic was Princess – later
Queen – Elizabeth.

...

In 1942, at age 16, Elizabeth registered with the Labour Exchange –the British employment agency at the time – and was extremely keen to join a division of the women’s armed forces. Her father was reluctant to let her do so, but eventually relented. Once in the Auxiliary Territorial Service, Elizabeth learned how to change a wheel, deconstruct and rebuild engines, and drive ambulances and other vehicles.

Joining the ATS as an honorary Second Subaltern, Elizabeth achieved the rank of honorary Junior Commander within five months. Here she can be seen maintaining an Austin K2 ambulance and a "Tilly" light truck.

I think you're an insufferable prick, Mechanic (no offence).

However, kudos to you for this thread - I've always admired Lizzie for her ability to strip down a truck's engine.

I think she's great, and I don't want to see the Republic until she's dead.

And, I don't want that to happen for a very long time.

the Queen is wearing a Classic Battle Dress Uniform... (with skirt)

I wore a very similar uniform (without skirt) when I was in the ADF... with Black Belt..

Big Vic Fellow would have worn the same outfit when he did his time...

Sorry Mech - I was Navy Mate.  Back in the days of steam and furnace fuel oil.  I mainly wore overall (no jocks  Wink )  and sweated my bum off.  enjoyed the crap out of it though.  Was on submarines for a few years - we wore  stubbies and t shirts because the dieso just rotted your clothes.   I remember crapping myself when we came up sideways from 600 feet during an emergency tank blow...still think about that - and still have the stubbies  -   can post them if you cough up the stamp money Wink

I wore Battledress, in my time in, Mechanic.

Betty Windsor had a mind of her own, without a doubt (and still does apparently) and has proved that the Royals govern their people by the will of the people and has won their hearts.   She is the same age as my mother, who also served in WWII in Searchlights in WA.  She also knows her own mind.

I'm a Republican but I can appreciate a foreign monarch's ability.  She should not, however, be the Queen of Australia.   We deserve to elect/appoint our own Head of State.

Personally, I favour creating our own Monarchy.  It would answer all the needs of the Monarchists from a constitutional point of view and the Republicans' as well.  I believe we should invite Anne out to become the Queen of Australia.  She would have to, of course, become a citizen but as she has no chance of inheriting throne in the UK, I'm sure she'd welcome the chance.

Someone said we could not judge a person's Aboriginality on their skin colour.  Why isn't that applied in the matter of Pascoe?  Tsk, tsk, tsk...   Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

our female politicians (including pyne, bandt and de nutella) should put up a pic of her on the fridge to remind them of the attributes of a fine leader

calm
understated
never whiney
never a drama 'queen"
resilient
stoic
quiet
peaceful.

she could certainly mentor SHY and plibosek

Pity we can't see behind the mask to see what she was really like.

She is certainly a polished actor. But she has been trained how to act all her life by the royal minder service.

Time we stopped bowing to a foreign monarch, indeed to any monarchs.  We should become a peoples' republic and elect our head of state.   We need to cut the last apron strings to the UK and ditch Lizzie as our Queen.   We should have no bush aristos.  I say we should bring out the tumbrels and take them all to meet their maker at the hands of the peoples' executioner in public outside New Parliament House!    Grin Cheesy Grin Cheesy Grin Cheesy Grin Cheesy
