Shorten on Collision Course with ALP Left
Jul 22nd, 2015 at 7:58pm

Labor will endorse a policy of asylum seeker boat 'turnbacks' at the party's national conference in Melbourne. Opposition Leader Bill Shorten and Shadow Immigration Minister Richard Marles will present the policy to the ALP national conference on the weekend. In an opinion piece in the Herald Sun newspaper, Mr Marles said a 'terrible loss of life' had occurred on Labor's watch, saying the option of boat turnbacks must be on the table.'We won't allow people smugglers to reopen the perilous journey from Java to Australia again,' Mr Marles said. The policy is likely to be the subject of heated debate at the conference, as the party's left opposes the turnback policy. 'Labor should in no way support turning back asylum seeker boats,' former speaker Anna Burke told Sky News on Monday. Senior figures have indicated their support for the policy in recent weeks, though there has been no official stance given by the party's leadership. - See more at: http://www.skynews.com.au/news/top-stories/2015/07/22/labor-to-support-asylum-bo...

It doesn't matter what they say at the national conference. Even if they endorse turnbacks, they'll reverse that if they ever win office again. The ALP have proven they can't be trusted on this issue.

When you have two diametrically opposed wings, as both old parties do, both end up selling out their principles.

We all new Labor's left were heartless bastards long ago.

After that deflection, back to Labor's Left.
Why are they heartless bastards?
Obviously Greens are to ethical for them, so why don't they create a new party.

Or is power at any expense, more important to them?

This isn't about Greens so stop trying to create diversion.

Why is labor's left so power hungry, that they are willing to make themselves in the image of Tony Abbott.

Why are Labor's left such gutless bastards.

How do you come to that conclusion....It is the Labor Left who are opposing turn backs....The only voters the Greens can entice are disgruntled Labor voters who will not vote for the Coalition....That is why the Greens bullshit to remain relevant!!!

Anyone with a sense of empathy and a brain and a bit of courage knows Australia's asylum seeker policies are just thinly veiled Fascist populism playing on xenophobic fears using "boat deaths" as a deflection of criticism while ignoring actual potential solutions that don't involve boat turn backs.

Real solutions to the Asylum seeker issue would require a great deal of political courage, real statesmanship and diplomacy, too bad Australia's Fascistic populist policies in this regard are actually popular among the voters on both sides of the mainstream political landscape (Lab/Lib) so doing the right thing won't net you votes (and actually likely will lose you votes).

I have no doubt in my mind though that in 30-40 years time, Children will be taught about our treatment of Asylum seekers as a crime against humanity and a great stain on our nations legacy.

Most people who are extreme left are gutless sell-outs if that is your opinion....The Labor Left are just as courageous as the Greens but do not have the numbers to formulate policy within the party....That is the problem with the Greens who have no idea about how the world works!!!

Well said Kiron.

People must also realise that how we treat refugees is the way we will be treating Australians down the track. Are you prepared to be treated as LibLab want refugees treated?

If Labor's Left were as courages as The Greens, they would of divorced the Right Faction and formed their own party. This way maintaining their ethical core.
Unfortunately Labor's Left are pigs with their head in the trough. They will gulp whatever crap is dished up to them.
