No art form is set in cement. Many people are, in fact to a certain extent most of us are.
Change doesn't necessarily mean progress or improvement though.

You must be a jazz fan greg if you know about those people.
So if you are, you have a soul and I hereby exempt you from my latest thought bubble "Why are the left such joyless people"

I'm am a Jazz person.

To be fair, though: those names I mentioned are pretty much the Beatles, Stones, and Led Zep of jazz.

Time Out and Kind of Blue are essential albums, even if you're not really a jazz fan.

Being a Zappa fan I've come to love other jazz guitarists like Pat Metheny, John Scofield (probably my favourite), John McLaughlin, Larry Carlton, Mike Stern, etc.

As far as jazz saxophone goes, John Coltrane's A Love Surpreme is a must have album too.

How can anyone not like this? ...

If you want to hear a different Brubeck find Jazz at Oberlin.
Jazz Red Hot & Cool was my introduction to Brubeck and I think it remains one of their best.
Paul Desmond (oh sorry marla, he's white) remains one of my favourite all time horn players for his sheer lyrical beauty.

Good stuff, but I wouldn't call it jazz.

It's big band/swing.

Still good, though.

I can remember hearing records of the Miller band roaring like Count Basie. All those guys had jazz backgrounds.

I've got an old Brad Mehldau CD called Places. Its got a message stamped across the front:

For Promotional use only, sale or transfer prohibited. Must be returned to recording company.

"Yeah? Come and get it!"

Well, the holiday weed stash is wearing thin and soon it'll be back to work but why not go out on a high?
