Litter sample protest, shamimg
Mar 24th, 2015 at 6:30pm

If I win lotto and run out of things to do I think I will gather some like minded people around me and do litter sampling on the sides of our roads.

Do 500metre sections/samples then identify the source of the litter.
The make a video and put it on youtube or facebook, wherever.

This would identify which companies are selling products that end up littering our roads.

I dont think companies should be able to use packaging that is going to end up becoming litter.
The packaging should be refundable i.e. drink containers or completely biodegradable.

Here in WA drink sellers have resisted deposits on drink containers and our roadsides are a total mess with glass and plastic.
Yet we did have deposits on containers when I was a kid.

If I worked out how much litter was on the roads Australia wide, and identified how much each company was contributing we could work out how much it would cost each company to have to go and clean it up.
Maybe then we could present each company with a bill for the cleanup.

I know who would get the biggest bills here in WA, alcohol producers and energy drink producers, filthy pigs!

Totally agree, companies need to take responsibility for the packaging of their products and should be fined for allowing non biodegradable packaging, Mcdonalds are a prime example, should be taken to court for packing all their takeaway products in plastic and foam.

You need to go and live in the trees with the monkeys, they have no need for packaging, humans on the other hand demand packaging, most of us are responsible with our left over packaging alas it only takes a careless few to give the rest of us humans a bad name. Sad

You'll get no disagreement from me. Your post just prompted me to look at the (very) fine print on the 3 tallies I just brought home after a hard day's work - 10c refund on each bottle at SA/NT collection agencies.

I still remember the 'bottle-O's' from when I was a kid. There used to be a meager income gleaned from the collection of such refundable items - sufficient to eke out a pension or encourage the youngsters around town into collecting.

And has anyone else noticed how 'organic' vegies are displayed in the supermarkets - on styrene trays covered in gladwrap.   Roll Eyes

I seem to remember a push some years ago with regard to replacing plastic bags at supermarkets. Encourage everyone to bring their owns bags and place a surcharge on the plastic ones at the checkout. T'would appear that the new self-service checkouts have defeated that worthwhile move.

One has only to watch a few videos about the Third-World people scratching a living from their own society's castoffs to realise just how much we waste on a day-to-day basis.

The 'Throw-away' society predicted by Alvin Toffler in 1970 has finally arrived.
