Aldi wine report
Mar 20th, 2015 at 11:19am

A generic 2012 Chianti Classico from Italy at $9.99. A nice drop at the price and I would think just about at its most drinkable now.

Memories of those raffia covered bottles flood back.

I am sure some of their wine is very nice for the price.  I once bought a $3 bottle of white wine from Aldi for cooking and when I had a taste to see what it was like I was surprised to find that it was fairly decent.

I have been told their wines are quite good. Will they be selling wine in their Australian stores?

I don't drink very much wine at home and my husband doesn't drink it at all, but I've also heard Aldi wine is pretty good. We have quite a collection of different wines that we've won on trivia nights at our local.

I am not sure whether you are putting us on or not but yes, they do have an alcohol section in a lot of their stores. Some of their older stores may not be big enough to accommodate that without renovation.

My local store is pretty small but it has still managed to make a small section for alcohol.  I am hoping a bigger store is opened up in the area eventually and I might frequent it more.

Quote:
EXCLUSIVE: Australia’s biggest wine snobs have sniffed, sipped and spat their way through more than 2000 wines — only to judge six bottles from Aldi as among the best the country has to offer.

The Sydney International Wine Competition found a $6.99 Cabernet Savuingnon from South East Australia and a $9.99 Semillon, blended specifically for the Aldi discount supermarket chain, to be in its top 100
.
And Aldi’s $4.99 Spanish Tempranillo snagged a Blue Gold award — the equivalent of a silver medal.

A panel of 14 international and Australian judges presided over the competition with no knowledge of the identity or prices of the wines they were tasting.

Of the 2000 wines tasted, 280 earned top-100, Blue Gold (silver) or Gold (bronze) status.

Why would I be "putting you on" about cheap wine?

As far as I was aware, Australia had not yet allowed selling alcohol in supermarkets.

Many Woolies and Coles stores also have their own liquor departments attached.  You can either walk through from the supermarket or from the street.

Thank you. I know woollies and Coles have seperate bottle shops (not drive thru), but in Europe you can actually buy alcohol in the supermarket aisles, which is the reason for my question.

No it's not on the shelves next to the supermarket products but it's still a part of the store.  In my small Aldi the liquor section is just kind of boxed off next to the checkouts.

Sorry, you get a bit suspicious of some posts around here.
I think it will be a long time before we see alcohol on the grocery shelves in this country. It's a bit of a joke really when, as has been said, they can be stacked near the checkout anyway.

Just sampled a Sauvignon Blanc from what I think is a new range at Aldi - their Patisserie du Vin range.

Young, promiscuous and eager to please. (God you're a goose Bogarde!)

Also they have a Syrah (Shiraz) in the range. Bought but not yet sampled.

PS If you try the Syrah, they now have a very small portion Roquefort cheese to go with it. They did have, may still, a Stilton, but the portion was too big for me to get through in a reasonable time. This one is ideal size though.
