(Philippines) How about that great delicacy of the Philippines - You take a fertilized duck or chicken egg, bury it in the ground for a few weeks and then enjoy.

Also known as "the treat with feet" or "the egg with legs".

Balut are duck eggs that have been incubated until the foetus is all feathery and beaky, and then boiled alive. The bones give the eggs a uniquely crunchy texture.

They are enjoyed in Cambodia, Philippines and the fifth and seventh levels of hell. They are typically sold by street vendors at night, out of buckets of warm sand.





Baby mice wine is a traditional Chinese and Korean "health tonic," which apparently tastes like raw gasoline.

Little mice, eyes still closed, are plucked from the embrace of their loving mothers and stuffed (while still alive) into a bottle of rice wine.

They are left to ferment while their parents wring their tiny mouse paws in despair, tears drooping sadly from the tips of their whiskers.

Wait, it gets worse ...
Do you wince at the thought of swallowing a tequila worm?

Imagine how you'd feel during a session on this bastard. Whoops, I swallowed a dead mouse!

A good news post on our favourite additions to our burgers. I miss this.

Beetroot on burgers

This one isn’t entirely unique to Australia, it’s super popular in New “don’t-get-our-accents-confused-with-Australians” Zealand too, but as burger lovers we couldn’t ignore this one. This is exactly what it sounds like; a burger with a slice of pickled beetroot on it. We’re kind of OK with this one, it’s a burger topping that never caught on with the rest of the world but we think it works. A good burger topping adds contrast to the awesome meatiness of the burger – the sharp tang of the beetroot adds something you rarely find in other burger toppings. Good work Australia, you win this round. (Though sometimes they also add a fried egg too … way to go overboard, Australia. Round lost.)

I have never heard of it being called peanut paste.  It's always been peanut butter to me.

I Googled it and apparently peanut paste is a Queensland term.  Something about Queensland legislation prohibiting anything other than dairy products to be called butter?

The only time I've heard it called Peanut Butter, is on old American TV shows.

I've always known it as Peanut Paste.

I'd always known of it as Peanut Butter in NSW, but after coming up here to Qld I started hearing people refer to it as Peanut Paste.

In regard to the buried, boiled Duck eggs, I've tried the unburied, but freshly boiled fertilised eggs of the Chicken variety, and despite what you'd think the whole crunchy bones, beak and feather experience would be like, they're a very yummo and recommended culinary experience.

In my day, Shepherd's Pie was made from the left-over Sunday roast lamb, minced up and topped with mashed potatoes.

These days they use raw minced beef to make it.  No wonder they add cheese on top. 

An American friend rang me, years ago (from Connecticut), about making Shepherd's Pie. He figured it was a "Australian" recipe.  He wanted to know whether he should grate some carrots into the minced beef mix and put cheese on top of the mashed potatoes.  I laughed.  Americans tend to put cheese on top of just about everything, so it seems.  Oh, and I have from a reliable source that the cheese the Yanks use tastes like soap. Much like the Kraft Cheddar cheese you give small children to nibble.
