Campbell Newman Admits LNP Could Lose Election

Campbell Newman admits LNP could lose election      Smiley

Date

    Brisbane Times

Premier Campbell Newman has admitted the LNP could be relegated to just a one-term government in Queensland.   Smiley

Speaking to Fairfax Radio 4BC Mornings, Mr Newman said the 2015 election would be a "tight" contest.

And despite having won a historic majority at the 2012 poll, Mr Newman said there was a possibility the Opposition could pull off what was considered an absolute impossibility just two-and-a-half years ago and take back government.

Premier Campbell Newman has admitted Labor could win the election, saying it would cause "chaos" for Queensland.

"...The Labor party could win with the support of independents and minor parties and if that was to happen, that would spell chaos for Queensland," he said.

"We would see the same situation frankly that we have seen in Canberra for the last seven or eight years. We don't want that. These are uncertain times. We need a strong team to take the state forward."

Mr Newman continued his trend of using the word "strong" as an adjective in as many situations as possible, while explaining why he believed the latest published polls showed he still hadn't turned voter support around.

"Why are people responding in that particular way? Well we have had to make difficult decisions, strong decisions, but we are getting the state back on track, because we have done these things, and I believe in the campaign there is an opportunity for people to do the compare and contrast," he said.

"Because the other side don't have a plan and they are bringing back the old gang, the people who got us into the mess."

Mr Newman said his government had spent the time since the March 2012 election doing "exactly what we were elected to do".

"Which was to sort out the big mess economically and financially for the state and also get to work revitalising the economy and turning government around," he said.

"We have done a lot of those things and there is more to do."

Well..they need something to arrest the slide in jobs and living standards in the state.
The LNP obviously have no idea what they are doing so they should be booted out.

If he does get back in it will be one term of a hung parliament and another 20 yrs in the wilderness after the next election.

Why limit it to two? Three one-term Coalition governments are on the cards on current polling.

Can the Coalition lose 100 seats around the country at the next election after the Abbott government gained office in the nine jurisdictions combined? They are on track to do this if the polls are accurate.

Why though? How can you say that the same won't happen to Labor, if they win? I think that this isn't a Liberal-Labor thing, I think that Australians are just sick of both parties and willing to turf out first-term governments of either persuasion. Just look at the federal election in 2010. Labor went from a crushing win in 2007 to a draw, and only formed government because two country independents went against their own electorates. Besides which, there were also a few pivotal bellwether seats in NSW that ran very poor campaigns (Page, Lindsay, Robertson etc...), and if they had not done so the Coalition would have likely won.

Wouldn't it be just fitting though if the LNP ended up falling one or two seats short of majority government and had to form a minority government with the support of minor parties and independents. If the fruit of power is just out of reach, it is better to stretch a little.

Politics 101 - always be the first to paint yourself as the underdog. If its clear you are headed for a landslide win, say "I think this will be a tough election" and "I don't take anything for granted". If it appears to be a little closer raise the possibility that you might lose.

It has little bearing on reality though - there really isn't a dogs chance in hell that the LNP won't be returned in this election. About the only interesting thing about this election will be seeing if Newman will retain his seat.

Current polling? I thought the LNP has been ahead for a while now.
