SA to dredge Murray mouth

This is insane.

An ever-dwindling resource and they want to waste it. How is this even close to an environmentally sound decision?

Charles Sturt – after 4 days of trying to reach the Murray mouth in 1830 sums it up as well as anyone ever has.

“Australian rivers fall rapidly from the mountains in which they originate into a level and extremely depressed country; having weak and inconsiderable sources, and being almost wholly unaided by tributaries of any kind; they naturally fail before they reach the coast, and exhaust themselves in marshes or lakes; or reach it so weakened as to be unable to preserve clear or navigable mouths, or to remove the sand banks that the tide throws up before them.”

Idiots. Angry

Because as stated here

http://www.abc.net.au/mediawatch/transcripts/1207_marohasyreport.pdf

In fact, the Murray River often ran strong in spring and summer, but by autumn had slowed and then a south westerly wind would pick up and the sea would pour in

Not stating that you're wrong about dredging, just using Charles Sturt as a reference.

In a time of universal deceit — telling the truth is a revolutionary act.

No evidence whatsoever it can be attributed to George Orwell or Eric Arthur Blair (in fact the same guy)

Matthew Flinders 1803 – Mapped that coastline and never mentioned any river mouth.

The simple fact is the Murray mouth was never free to constantly run into the ocean.

I agree, but the problem as it stands is that with the amount of irrigating we do we reduce the chances of it opening, which it used to do occasionally.
